I feel bad that it's been so long since I've been able to produce any new Hebrew Chapters or Hebrew Sketches episodes. I'm really sorry!
This last year has been quite disruptive for us. At the end of Auguest we moved from our home in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where we'd lived for the last three years and transitioned to living somewhat more nomadically in our trailer. We spent September and October parked on my Mom's driveway wrapping up moving details and getting reacquainted with our new home. Then in November we drove down to Albuquerque, where we're spending the winter. Now we're finally all settled in and getting into a normal routine.
So here's the good news. I build a mobile studio of foldable panels that only takes an hour or two to take down and set up and that we can haul on a trailer behind our van. And this last week I finally finished it - including the lighting and sound insulation inside - and was able to film a couple Hebrew Chapters episodes! (You can find the links for the new Hebrew Chapters episodes farther down in this email.)
All that to say, I'm hoping to be producing new videos for your enjoyment on a more regular basis now. Thank you for your patience with this process. And to our subscribers - thank you for your ongoing support. You're the ones financially powering Holy Language Institute. I can't say how much I appreciate you.
I hope you enjoy this picture tour!
Genevieve is following Yeshua in a Hebrew way! She also serves the Holy Language tribe by doing the accounting for Holy Language Institute. Here's her story.
I grew up in a wonderful family following Yeshua and attending a conventional Sunday church up until high school. I have been blessed to grow in my relationship with Yeshua from an early age until my family's pathway following Messiah took a change of course into the depths of the Hebraic roots of our faith.
Around the time of the Y2K "end of the world" scare my family was a part of a Bible Study that began introducing us to the Hebrew roots of our faith and the Jewish context of Scripture. We learned and read where Scripture states that the law will be written on our hearts (Ezek. 37) and the appointed times of The LORD will be celebrated in the Messianic Era. We realized that if we will be observing these ordinances in the days to come we would do well to begin practicing them at present.
We began our journey doing Torah by keeping a Passover Seder, then we began resting on Friday evening, Erev Shabbat, and then my Father totally switched to keeping Shabbat instead of Sunday for resting and so did the rest of our family. So we proceeded on from there by the Holy Spirit's gentle guidance as we have taken on more of Yeshua's yoke. It has been a truly restful and freeing journey for my soul, and the aspect of learning Hebrew along this path has been a pure joy for my heart.
I have always been fascinated with words and communication, and being able to express thoughts and ideas using different words and utilizing different languages. I originally came in contact with Hebrew through a sweet Jewish neighbour. The first word I learned from her was "Shalom."
As we kept Shabbat and began learning some Hebrew prayers the desire in me to learn Hebrew more fluently became so strong that when I had the opportunity to take Hebrew in university I went for it! I have taken one year of Biblical Hebrew and one year of Modern Hebrew. That gave me the strong foundation to read The Torah in Hebrew and keep learning from there. Next came my opportunity to travel to Israel!
In the spring of 2006 I went with some of my family to volunteer for 6 weeks in Israel! Wow, what a life-changing experience! I got to practice a bit of my Modern Hebrew, see the land of Elohim's covenant before my eyes, feel it beneath my feet, and put my hands to work in the land. I met some amazing people and started some long-lasting friendships. I also met one especially amazing man one day in a vineyard on the Mount of Blessing whose love for Hebrew inspired me greatly, and who won my heart forever!
Elohim brought me to the land of Israel to meet "my Israel," my best friend and partner in the continuation of my Hebrew journey. Izzy, my beloved husband, and I began the work of Holy Language Institute together to inspire our fellow disciples to learn to love and communicate with our Master, Yeshua, The living Word, through the beauty of learning Hebrew. It has been a grand adventure thus far.
The part I play in the Holy Language Tribe is more behind the scenes than Izzy, but I love the work we are doing! I handle the bookkeeping for the tribe and whenever I see all of the names of people who are actively supporting Holy Language to learn and to keep this work growing, I am so, so grateful for each and every single person. I am realizing how important each person's role is in Messiah's body and just how unique each person's story and journey is, as well. It is so humbling and encouraging. I thank Yeshua for each one of you and ask that he bless you abundantly beyond what you would ask or think! I love learning alongside my fellow disciples as we travel this path of faith after our Master together!
Recently I began reading some of the weekly parashah in Hebrew after a long hiatus from this ritual that I love. As I read a few days ago in parashat Terumah where Adonai instructs Moshe to construct the Ark of the Covenant, I saw more clearly the reflections of Yeshua's face through the Hebrew looking glass. In Exodus 25 Adonai tells Moshe the dimensions for the length, width, and height of the box from where He anticipates meeting face to face with His beloved people. The Holy Spirit reminded me of Shaul's prayer in Ephesians 3 in which he hopes that all mankind would know the length, width, depth, and height of the love of Messiah. He wants to meet so intimately with us in the holy place of Yeshua's life and atonement and covenant! I love gazing upon Yeshua's face and hearing his heart beat for the whole of His people!
When I read in Hebrew I feel alive more than at any other time! I love this holy language of Scripture. When I had my first taste of the Hebrew language on my tongue, the appetite in my heart and soul opened up a wellspring that runs eternally deep, and it has yet to be fully satisfied.
When I listen to, and especially when I read in Hebrew so that the words roll off my own tongue and resound through my own vocal chords into the realm of time and space, I feel my heart and spirit swell with pleasure and a deep love connection with my Creator. I feel His breath flowing through me and His kisses upon my mouth.
