"This is a great album, strong, tenacious in its quality and simply makes a great listen".

Jazz in Europe

“The musical and cultural polarity displayed by this International group from their diverse backgrounds is proof that open music can provide the perfect meeting place to create something unique."

Iain Ballamy

“Once in a while, an album like this appears on the horizon, becoming the unputdownable “Earworm” that Costello portrays at the heart of his colourful recording”.

London Jazz News

“This is highly melodic music that is readily accessible, but consistently intriguing and full of rhythmic sophistication. It all makes for a very distinctive album and one that deserves to do well.”

About Transitions

'Transitions' was released September 2017 on 33 Jazz Records. It was recorded at Artesuono Studios in Udine, Italy and mixed and mastered by ECM engineer Stefano Amerio. "Transitions because the music flows from one mood to another, one groove and melody to the next but how we get there is left to chance. Transitions because in life sometimes things seem to come together all at once and so create a new journey." Julian Costello

Julian Costello quote

Julian Costello Quartet - Lighthearted, Quirky Virtuosity

feat. Maciek Pysz, g; Yuri Goloubev, db; Adam Teixeira, d

Saxman Julian Costello's quartet is internationally diverse, energetic, creative and at times extremely funny. The group recently completed a national Arts Council England tour of new album 'Transitions' - released on 33 Jazz Records - eliciting fantastic reactions from their audiences. They're all on the same wavelength and this comes across in their intense, yet amusing sets that take the listener on a journey of twists and often hairpin turns! A group of musicians communicating, improvising - not allowing ego to get in the way of true collaboration. Julian Costello writes most of the music and gently directs the band. Maciek is a very creative and expressive guitarist who plays solos that develop wonderfully. Yuri, the strong glue that holds the band together, shines in his solos whilst Adam is an amazing drummer - very much in demand - who also plays percussion. Now sharpened swords and at the top of their game after performing so many gigs the quartet is keen to bring their unique vibe to more jazz clubs and festivals and can offer inspiring workshops and master classes.

Julian Costello is a London-based musician, composer and teacher. He won a scholarship from Trinity College of Music where he took a Postgraduate Certificate of Performance in the saxophone. Julian writes the music for the 'Julian Costello Quartet', plays in a number of jazz big bands, in a vocal/cello and guitar trio and in a world music trio called 'Vertigo' with Tabla/Percussion, Oud/Guitar and Soprano Saxophone. Julian plays a 1932 Conn Transitional Tenor Saxophone and a 1967 Selmer MK VI Soprano.
