Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, who is also Chairman of RIPTA’s Board of Directors (right) gets off a bus at Kennedy Plaza with Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza (left), as they arrive downtown to celebrate the reopening of the renovated transportation hub.

The new year has started out with RIPTA buses in the news for two high-profile events – the inauguration of Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Kennedy Plaza transit hub in downtown Providence.

Officials chose regular RIPTA routes as their mode of transportation to both of the events. On January 6, Avedisian, who is also chairman of RIPTA’s Board of Directors, hopped on the Route 8 bus on Jefferson Boulevard for a quick trip to the Ocean State Theater where he was sworn into his ninth term in office.

A couple of weeks later on January 20, newly-elected Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza boarded a RIPTA bus near his home in the city’s Silver Lake section to ride downtown for the ceremony marking the official reopening of Kennedy Plaza which had been closed for several months for design improvements and other renovations.

Both mayors said they chose to travel by bus to underscore the importance of public transportation in Rhode Island and the need to support infrastructure improvements and expansion in the state. RIPTA is proud to have been the transportation of choice for these two important events!
