RIPTA ACCOMMODATES THAYER STREET HOLIDAY STROLL ON DECEMBER 14

RIPTA will detour Route 1 (Eddy/Hope/Benefit) to accommodate the Thayer Street Holiday Stroll. The detour will be in effect beginning at 11:00am on Sunday, December 14 until 4:30pm that afternoon.

RIPTA ACCOMMODATES DOWNTOWN JINGLE 5K ON DECEMBER 14

RIPTA will detour bus routes in the downtown Providence area on Sunday, December 14, 2014 in order to accommodate the Downtown Jingle 5K Road Race. Bus routes 6, 17, 19, 20, 22, 27, 28 will be detoured from 9:30am until 1pm. Bus routes R-Line, 1, 3, 31, 33, 34, 50, 54, 60, 78 and 92 will be detoured from 10:30am until 12:30pm. Bus Stop P will be temporarily relocated to Fulton Street. All RIPTA bus lines are to expect minor delays around Kennedy Plaza during this time.

ROSA PARKS

On Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) joined community leaders in honoring the 59th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ historic stand against segregation on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

To pay tribute to Ms. Parks and to celebrate Rosa Parks Day, the Rosa Parks Human Rights Day Committee organized a program that included speakers plus a reenactment of Ms. Parks’ refusal to give up her bus seat to a white person in 1955.

RIPTA also placed commemorative advertisements on its buses in tribute to Ms. Parks for the month of December.

RIPTA TO RUN HOLIDAY SERVICE SCHEDULE ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2014 AND THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 2015

RIPTA will operate all regular fixed-route bus service on a Sunday/Holiday schedule on Thursday, December 25, 2014 in observance of Christmas Day and Thursday, January 1, 2015 in observance of New Year’s Day. RIPTA offices, including the Photo Identification and Ticket Sales Offices in Kennedy Plaza, will not be staffed on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Also, the Flex Service reservation line (1-877-906-FLEX) and the RIde reservation line (461-9760) will not be staffed on either holiday.

RIPTA HOSTS FREE “HOW TO RIDE RIPTA WORKSHOP”

RIPTA will host a free “How to Ride RIPTA Workshop” at the Westerly Senior Center, 39 State Street, Westerly, RI on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 10:30AM. During this workshop, RIPTA will teach seniors the basics of using public transportation including how to use RIPTA’s Flex Service. RIPTA Photo ID staff will be on site to process Senior/Disabled Bus Passes for qualified applicants. Those interested in obtaining a RIPTA Senior Bus Pass are asked to bring $25.00 cash to the session and proof of being over 65 years of age.

This free How to Ride RIPTA Workshop program, developed by AARP and RIPTA, is designed to empower the senior community to mobilize and remain independent. All attendees of this travel training program will receive a free step-by-step “How to Ride Guide.” This guide contains information on how to read a bus schedule, fares, senior discounts and more.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS
