Hello ,

And on this very Scottish of days.. I just like to say Och the noo. (or by the time you read this it might be Och the aye) .
Everything has to stop to take in this major vote in this tiny country. I have just left Bali, and just arrived in China. In both places the Scottish referendum is a talking point and making the newspapers.

I asked one or two people in Bali what they thought about Scottish devolution. Indonesia is a huge country with a population of 250 million, Bali like Scotland has it's own distinct culture, a similar population and the men are are also prone to wearing plaid skirts (it's true). So... would they like to be independant? No, not at all, are you crazy? it's not even on the political map - I was told no-one is thinking this. They can't understand Scottish thinking at all - why would you not want to be a member of a club that big and powerful and will stick up for you when you need it.

In China, they just think it odd that Britain would want to lose the whiskey... we shouldn't even give them a choice. In China these type of decisions should be left to those smart people who went to university to study government. How can you expect people with selfish interests to think clearly, on things that affect the wider society?
There is a part of China (beginning with the letter "T") and you can (t')bet that if I bring this up viens start popping and a very restrained eastern anger starts boiling to the surface. We don't apparently understand the issues.

My last day in Bali, was one of the many festival days. All businesses were all but closed, but strangely showrooms just left open with a number to call. This is one of the most trusting places on earth... it is normal for shops to leave stock unattended trusting no-one will steal anything.

I snapped this on Thursday in Ubud.

Vishwakarma Day is a day people pray for prosperity, particularly craft people who have their tools of trade blessed. They also do this in India in the Kolkata region I was in a couple of weeks ago. It's a big deal in craft orientated Ubud. Everyone dressed up so smartly, the ladies carrying huge plates of fruit offering piled high and balanced on their heads, school children providing musical entertainment.

Bali of course is highly devolved, local government, local autonomous towns and even every village has an annually voted in boss. As it happens at least three of our suppliers are also current village bosses, and I can tell you they take the job jolly serious. One guy we deal with has permanent earphone link by walkie talkie to his deputies, very humble and very paternally caring for every detail of the village. The place is kept spick and span, things must look beautiful, and the balance and harmony is paramount.

Doing business with the village boss on Wednesday, his wife is taking our order, the guy - look carefully he has two walkie talkies and was busy organising the next day festival. He was happy because our order would give work to many in the village.

In our village (Yellow Coconut Village) where we have a warehouse and office, we were asked (nicely) if we wouldn't mind loading our containers, quietly and after midnight so as to cause minimum traffic congestion, and a container in the street in the day would disrupt harmony and balance.

One drawback to this autonomy is the amount of ceremonies they organise. They live for them and love them, so much apart of life in Bali. But totally disruptive to business... it's why we are always out of stock of Bali craft items. Ok I know it's not a good excuse, I'm working on it.

What did I learn from what the Asians think about Scotland? Devolved is good. The best run places are highly devolved, but backed by trusting government.
In Bali I learned that Balance, Harmony and Beauty are important, more important than money or power.
I say lets devolve Yorkshire! - we have more folks in Yorkshire than Scotland after all.

More news next week.
David
