Are you ready for GDPR?

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

As many of you will be aware, new GDPR legislation applies from 25th May 2018. In common with many organisations, IOL is reviewing what it needs to do in relation to data policies in preparation for GDPR, and likewise we recommend that all members do the same.

If you are handling personal data in any form, you will need to know how to comply with procedures for collecting, handling and destroying data. 'Data minimisation' appears to be one of the key aspects of the changes - only collect and hold data that you need to perform the service that you are providing.

IOL understandably cannot give individual advice to members - like other organisations we are referring members to the Information Commissioner's Office ico.org.uk for information on the changes. The latest e-newsletter from the Information Commissioner contains useful information and links including:

▪ Guide to the GDPR
▪ SME data protection self-assessment toolkit
▪ Lawful basis interactive guidance tool
▪ GDPR awareness campaign aimed at people running micro-businesses

Please keep an eye on your inbox as you will shortly receive an email from IOL asking you to confirm that you’re happy to continue to receive communications from us. We will respect your wishes either way but if there isn’t a response then we won’t be able to continue to send to you until we hear from you.

Kind regards,

Neal Anderson, Professional Standards Manager
