Just like tasting a great wine or living the pure experience of a live concert, listening to a lacquer is a fleeting chance that can only be lived once.

A free event limited to 50 people. Booking in advance is required in order to attend.

Recently there has been increasing promotion of audiophile vinyl albums and expensive, limited edition, remastered box sets with unreleased songs as extras. Some are very good, indeed we play some in our Music Club.

Sarah Vaughan

At the Holywell Music Room you will be one of very few people in the world to hear a lacquer of the lost recordings played on a great turntable and system. Because of its softness, the lacquer wears off as it is listened to. Just like a concert, those pure emotions can only be lived once.

This public performance is not like anything that has happened before and it will never, ever happen again.

The Lost Recordings collection is the work of passionate people united around a common dream:
bring back to life legendary artists and give you the opportunity to live, for one concert, the powerful emotions of a live experience.

This is unique – don’t miss it.

The lost recordings

Unreleased recordings exhumed

'The epic journey started with Fondamenta, a label who helped Devialet build a team of highly skilled sound archaeologists. Over more than a year, they travelled the globe, searching for those missing recordings, lost in the vast array of archive centres.

The restoration and remastering work of the analogue tapes could not have been performed as perfectly without the help of Fondamenta. With Devialet Expert technology, they developed a unique process called Phoenix Mastering® which allowed the recovery of an incredible sound quality.'

The master lacquer

Crafted out of aluminium and coated with a soft nitrocellulose lacquer, heavier and wider than a vinyl LP (14” instead of 12”) with a hypnotising deep blue edge.

This truly fascinating object is the ultimate analogue medium. Thanks to its physical properties it is possible to cut all the finest textures and details of the original recording.

Yet, the lacquers are never listened to since they are only used in the vinyl manufacturing process to create the pressing die.

Few people in the world have the chance to listen to this unique medium. Since the lacquer wears off as it is listened to.

With The Lost Recordings collection, we offer you the opportunity to live and share this intensely emotional experience.

The ultimate analogue medium.

Holywell Music Room 003

Holywell Music Room

The venue

The Holywell Music Room is the oldest custom-built concert hall in Europe, it opened its doors to the public for the first time in 1748. It is ideally suited to chamber music or small ensembles.

Designed by Thomas Camplin, Vice-Principal of St Edmund Hall, the building was probably the brainchild of William Hayes, then Professor of Music at the University.

The Holywell has been the location for many hundreds of recitals and concert series featuring prestigious visiting musicians as well as many local groups and student performers.
