Fighting the Virus Together
The Covid-19 fallout continues in the book business, with Barnes & Noble Education furloughing its school store employees. But the pandemic has brought solidarity to the book world as well: Worldreader is working to educate vulnerable people about the virus, Libro.fm has hired 10 unemployed booksellers, and in the Bay Area, a new slate of virtual literary events is boosting booksellers. CNN reports that a pandemic thriller that was once rejected by publishers for being unrealistic is now getting a wide release, and in an interview with the New Yorker, author Lawrence Wright discusses what he learned from writing a pandemic novel of his own. And finally, PW has released its annual list of fast-growing independent publishers.

SUPPORTIVE COMMENTS

We have been getting a lot of feedback and many comments on our HELP CENTER, including from Jean & Ross Van Dusen, Gayle Lauradunn, Christina Stock, Melody Groves, Patricia Smith Wood, Charlene Dietz

Charlene Dietz said: "Well, you've not posted Isolated Pages for two days, so being a fussy-worrynut, I have to ask: Are you taking a vacation during your staycation? Are you okay? If you're fine and you've found something engaging (like a good book) then I'll relax."

Christina Stock said: "I am getting replies from our readers, they do appreciate the tips about the New Mexico Book Co-op authors. Yesterday’s featured author was Ramona Gault in Comfort food and books for comfort.

Gayle Lauradunn said: "I went for a walk this morning in my neighborhood and saw this message written in colored chalk on one driveway:
The year is 2050. Michael
has just opened the last
roll of toilet paper his
parents bought in 2020.
I certainly hope this is not true. Thanks for the newsletter, it makes me feel more connected to others."

Jean Van Dusen said: "ou “Hit My Funnybone” is a hit with us. A little humor is just the antidote we need."

A GOOD LAUGH

▪ Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half will come out with a drinking problem.
▪ I used to spin that toilet paper like I was on 'Wheel of Fortune'. Now I turn it like I'm cracking a safe.
▪ This morning I saw a neighbor talking to her cat. It was obvious she thought her cat understood her. I came into my house and told my dog..... we laughed a lot.
▪ My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately, that when I pee it cleans the toilet.
▪ I'm so excited --- it's time to take out the garbage. What should I wear?
▪ I hope the weather is good tomorrow for my trip to Puerto Backyarda. I'm getting tired of Los Livingroom.
▪ Classified Ad: Single man with toilet paper seeks woman with hand sanitizer for good clean fun.
▪ Day 6 of Homeschooling: My child just said "I hope I don't have the same teacher next year".... I'm offended.
▪ Better 6 feet apart than 6 feet under
▪ A fellow on the news said, ‘it’s like being back in high school — gas is cheap….and I’m grounded’!

RESOURCES

STOP WASHING YOUR FRUITS & VEGGIES WITH SOAP AND WATER
Even though soap is a kitchen staple and is effective at preventing the spread of the virus, it’s designed for cleaning surfaces and hands, and isn’t formulated with consumption in mind — meaning scrubbing your apples with soap isn’t a good idea, even if you’re worried about reducing virus transmission.
Why isn’t it a good idea to wash produce with soap?
Consuming soap can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other forms of gastrointestinal distress. Not only are those unpleasant, but they mimic some of the symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and could send you to the hospital, placing undue stress on our already-overburdened health care workers and facilities.
