Fighting the Virus Together
The Covid-19 fallout continues in the book business, with Barnes & Noble Education furloughing its school store employees. But the pandemic has brought solidarity to the book world as well: Worldreader is working to educate vulnerable people about the virus, Libro.fm has hired 10 unemployed booksellers, and in the Bay Area, a new slate of virtual literary events is boosting booksellers. CNN reports that a pandemic thriller that was once rejected by publishers for being unrealistic is now getting a wide release, and in an interview with the New Yorker, author Lawrence Wright discusses what he learned from writing a pandemic novel of his own. And finally, PW has released its annual list of fast-growing independent publishers.
