President's Note

Carlo-Alfano

Maryland League Coach Carlo Alfano.

It’s our mission to get #morekidsonbikes - but having over 22,500 student-athletes participating in activities across our leagues would not be possible without the over 11,000 registered coaches that provide skills instruction, lead rides, mentor, motivate and support our student-athletes. NICA Coaches not only provide valuable instruction and guidance to their student-athletes, but they also help create mountain biking communities. In this edition, you’ll meet Carmen Luna, a coach with the SoCal League who is helping create an inclusive community for both her student-athletes and their families through mountain biking.

Recently, while visiting the Maryland League, I was able to ride with Coach Carlo Alfano of the Monocacy Composite Team. The Monocacy Composite team is definitely a family affair as the team is also coached by Coach Carlo’s son, Alex Carlo, a Maryland League alum When not on the trails with his team, Coach Carlo has been working with his local City of Brunswick to build a new network of trails in the area. These trails are built with NICA race and risk management standards to support both the Maryland League and the local community. Coach Carlo remarked that the City of Brunswick is excited about the economic benefits these new trails are bringing.

We ask a lot of our NICA coaches because we want to provide the safest, most effective environment for our student-athletes to learn, thrive and develop not only as student-athletes but as successful young adults. Thank you NICA Coaches for your dedication to building strong minds, bodies, character and communities through interscholastic cycling!

Best regards,

Steve
