CHAOS Network - 21/12, 5pm @ Yours!

Hi everyone,

It's another very full newsletter this month! Thank you to everyone who got in touch to share their events and opportunities.

A reminder that our next virtual get together, and the final CHAOS meeting of 2020 is Monday 21st December at 5pm. Here's the Zoom link.

This meeting will be a return to the usual CHAOS style with space for everyone to connect, have a chat, share our news/events/recommendations and generally talk about how we've made it through this wild year.

Thanks to everyone who came along to our meeting last month which formed part of the consultation for Southampton's bid to become UK city of culture for 2025. It was amazing to see so many faces! Further Southampton 2025 consultation sessions will be taking place at the beginning of next year. Keep an eye on CHAOS social media and upcoming newsletters for details.

In the meantime, you can stay involved and up to date with discussions around Southampton 2025 by joining the City of Culture group on the CHAOS website.

Here are the first few CHAOS meeting dates for 2021 for you to put in your diary.

Mayflower 400

Belonging - coming to Westquay 17 – 20 December

Belonging is a multi-art installation and live performance project by Art Asia, which has been commissioned by Southampton City Council as part of the Mayflower 400th year anniversary. The installation will be exhibited at Westquay Shopping Centre on Thursday 17 – Sunday 20 December 2020.

Southampton residents aged 3 – 87 years old have contributed to this multi-arts project through following YouTube tutorials led by Art Asia's artists Cath Bristow, Dr. Pooja Angra and Susmita Bhattacharya. The tutorials explore: craft work, storytelling, and music-making. The resident's responses to Belonging have been captured in the form of songs, music, stories, poems, recipes, paper-boats, drawings, colour, and sound, and will be presented in a multi-sensory art installation that represents a home, and a site of belonging.

Walking through the installation, visitors will be immersed in a site of Belonging, surrounded by long, tall, banners hanging from the ceiling. The banners feature beautiful, intricate drawings carefully printed on colourful fabric, and will hang down the walls and from the central gazebo that visitors will walk around. There will also be streamers of paper boats, postcards, poems, recipes and stories linked together, hanging all along the walls that visitors can stop and read.

#MyGivingThanks
Have you taken part in Mayflower 400 Southampton's #MyGivingThanks campaign yet? The project is creating digital memories to bring the people of our city together in shared celebration.

Mayflower 400 Southampton want you to share your photos, images, videos, stories or poems of what you are grateful for, however small through social media using the hashtag #MyGivingThanks. They’ve created online activity packs for communities, families and businesses and a short film to inspire you and get you started.

Artists Shared Space and Light have been appointed to lead the artistic culmination of the Giving Thanks project. They will create content with communities and use photos and videos submitted by the public to create an online animated artwork which brings everyone together in our increasingly virtual world. The final piece will be premiered in Spring 2021.

In addition, through their partners Southampton Voluntary Services (SVS), small community organisations will be able to access training and small funds to support participation in the project during January 2021.

New exhibition for the Hidden Wardrobe on Old Northam Road

"Fruiting” is the latest exhibition by Mandy Smith.

Inspired by a mushroom found growing inside the Hidden Wardrobe the work is a reflection on the regeneration of Old Northam Road, the new communities ‘growing’ there and the incredible life of fungi.

Mandy said: ““The idea for this installation was conceived and made during the first lockdown and finished off in lockdown #2, FRUITING is a site-specific installation for the Hidden Wardrobe inspired by a mushroom found within. I have tried to create a light-hearted installation to lift the spirits of those passing by during this difficult time. Using ultra violet light, electricity and bright, bold colours FRUITING is inspired by the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

Fruiting runs from December 11th until January 24th

Southampton Cultural Services

Southampton Cultural Services have lots going on this December, both in person and online including family workshops and art gallery talks.

Gallery Online Talk: The End of Baroque: A Flowery Death On the Rocks Of Rococco
Artist and Art historian guides us through the Rococco, often referred to as the high Baroque movement.

Ornamental, flamboyant and theatrical, it was the backdrop for the Palace of Versailles and the court of Louis XVI of France. An excessive style for an excessive time? Compared to the order and refinement of the Classical style, Rococo was seen as gaudy, illogical and wonderfully indulgent.
Tues 15th December
7-8pm

Online Curator Talk: Shadow and Light
Join Emeritus professor, Stephen Foster, MBE to explore Shadows and Light.

This exhibition forms part of Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme, marking the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower on its now famous journey to the New World. Curated by Stephen Foster, it brings together works of contemporary art which relate to light as subject matter. Featuring photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, the exhibition also includes works from Southampton’s fine art collection.

Southampton Dolphin Trail

A dolphin sculpture trail will be coming to Southampton in partnership with Whale and Dolphin Conservation in 2021.

They are putting out an open call for artists submissions for the trail - Closing date for submissions is 20th January.

Dear Artist

Whale and Dolphin Conservation and Wild in Art would love you to get involved in Discover Dolphins, a fin-tastic outdoor sculpture trail of 30 – 35 life-size bottlenose dolphin sculptures that will be making a huge splash in Southampton in summer 2021, creating a buzz of excitement and enjoyment in the city post-pandemic. The sculptures arrive as a blank, 3D canvas, ready to be transformed into stunning pieces of art that will be admired by hundreds of thousands of local residents and visitors who will enjoy this free, family-friendly outdoor art gallery.

The Artists pack and Submission Form, dolphin template and Terms & Conditions are available on our Holding page (these will be transferred to the Discover Dolphins website as soon as this is live).

After the trail ends and a spectacular Farewell Weekend, when all the dolphins come together one last time, the sculptures will be auctioned to raise funds to support Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s vital work to protect dolphins, whales and their ocean homes. You can find out more about what your time and talent will be helping us to achieve on our website.

If you have any questions, or would like any further information, please get in touch at events@whales.org

We look forward to hearing from you and to seeing your fantastic designs for our flippered pod.

With very best wishes
Sharon Stevenson
