Dear Industry Stakeholder,

I would like to draw your attention to a current discussion paper available on funding for tourism in the Bega Valley Shire.

The paper is available for download here and submissions are encouraged.

The increasing strength of the Bega Valley tourism economy is very encouraging. We are doing far better than our competitors so clearly we have an appeal that is resonating with our prospective visitors.

In the fiercely competitive arena of regional tourism this strength does just not happen out of the blue. It is the result of careful positioning based on research and showcasing ourselves through the opportunities offered by the internet and social media as well as through traditional promotional means.

Tourism is now the mainstay of the shire economy. It is clear however that future growth will only happen if the proper resources are devoted to the management of the shire’s tourism efforts. Sapphire Coast Tourism is at the limit of its capacity. The discussion paper seeks suggestions from the community about how the necessary extra resources can be provided to continue to realise the region’s tourism potential.

Carefully managed tourism is good for the economy, jobs, infrastructure and the community’s social and economic wellbeing. Our key point of difference is our pristine natural environment, particularly the coastal area. Our appeal is enhanced through sharing our cultural and historic heritage and quality natural produce.

One distinctive feature of tourism in the Bega Valley Shire is the strength of partnerships between the community, businesses, local government and key players such as the National Parks and Wildlife Service. In the spirit of those partnerships your input is sought to this discussion process. I look forward to your submission.

Kind regards

Bruce Leaver
