The Nineth Sunday after Trinity - The Transfiguration | Holy Communion

This coming Sunday, August 6, is not only the 9th Sunday after Trinity, but also falls on the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord. Although the liturgical commemoration is noted on 6 August in the middle of the summer, in the Book of Common Prayer (1549 and 1552) the feast of the Transfiguration, which had a relatively low rank in the Sarum Calendar, is omitted, but the feast was restored to the Calendar, without a collect and reading being provided, by royal order in 1560. Therefore, the liturgical color remains Green for the Season of Trinity and the readings for Trinity 9 take precedence over the Feast of the Transfiguration. As a result, our focus and emphasis will remain on the collect, Epistle and Gospel readings for the 9th Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect for this Sunday causes us to reflect on the connection between thought and action.

Grant to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right, that we, who cannot do anything that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

We pray for the spirit to think and do what is right in order that we may be able to live according to God’s will. But why do we pray for such a spirit? — Because the Collect reminds us that “we cannot do anything that is good without thee”, echoing the words of our Saviour: “...without me ye can do nothing” (John 15. 5).

God’s Holy Spirit must be active in us each step of the way. In the first instance we simply rely on the goodness of God to bless us with good and rightful desires. In the second instance we must cooperate with God’s Holy Spirit by affirming these good desires and resisting the evil thoughts that come to us. In the third instance we cooperate with God’s Holy Spirit further by acting out those good and rightful thoughts and desires. Each stage is important and necessary if we are going to live according to God’s will.

This Sunday, The Rev. Dr. Jim Ferguson is our preacher and celebrant for the service of Holy Communion. In addition to his teaching work at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of PA, Dr. Ferguson is also a graduate of Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge PA. He and his wife Barbara are active in leading Bible Studies, Morning and Evening Prayer in their community which is located in Lititz, PA. In the past Jim and Barbara have been active in church planting and he now serves in our Diocese doing supply clergy work. We are grateful for his ministry among us and our joy to welcome Jim and his wife Barbara back to St. Peter’s Anglican Church today.

Hymn of the week - Like a River Glorious| WYE VALLEY

This week's hymn, Like a River Glorious was written by Frances Havergal (1836-1879) – Frances was born into an Anglican family, at Astley in Worcestershire, 14 December 1836. Both her father, William Henry Havergal (1793–1870), and her brother, Henry East Havergal, were priests in the Church of England. In addition her father was a writer, composer, and hymnwriter. Her brother Henry, was also an organist.

When she was five, her father moved to the Rectory of St. Nicholas, Worcester. In August, 1850, she entered Mrs. Teed's school, who had a strong influence on her. In the following year she says, "I committed my soul to the Saviour, and earth and heaven seemed brighter from that moment." Following a sojourn in Germany where she studied, Francis' scholastic acheivements were extensive, embracing several modern languages, together with Greek and Hebrew. On her return to England, she was confirmed in Worcester Cathedral, 17 July 1853.

Francis wrote this hymn following a visit to Wales, in which she pointed to the source of her perfect peace: “Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed, finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.”

By drawing on 2 passages from Isaiah’s prophecy, Frances tells us how we can find peace. In Isaiah 48:18, God promises peace like a river. In Isaiah 26:3, Isaiah wrote: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You”.

In one of her last letters, Frances quoted Romans 5:1: “We have peace with God”. Then she added, as a note to her friend, “It is yours already, purchased for you, made for you, sealed for you, pledged to you, by the word of the Father and the precious blood of Jesus”.

The Rev. Geoffrey Firth

St. Peter's Anglican Church is pleased to note that our Vicar Designate will be visiting us later this month and will be leading the Service of Holy Communion on August 20th at St. Peter's.

Rev. Firth is coming to St. Peters from England where he trained for ministry within the Church of England at Oak Hill Theological College in north London. On completing his training, Geoffrey was made a Deacon at Chester Cathedral in July 2006, and he returned there a year later to be ordained Presbyter. From 2006 to 2010 he was Curate at the parish Church of St. George, Poynton.

During his training, Geoffrey had to undertake a variety of ministry placements, one of which was a chaplaincy with the British Army. This subsequently led to an interest in chaplaincy to the military and in 2010 he joined the Royal Air Force. He was subsequently Commissioned as a Chaplain by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As a Chaplain Geoffrey has served at five different RAF stations around the UK and has been deployed to Afghanistan, the Falklands Islands and most recently the Expeditionary Air Group operating out of the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

We invite you to visit us on August 20 to hear Geoffrey open God's Word among us and celebrate the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
