MVPS NEW Kitchen Garden - Parent Focus Group

Casey and I have been meeting with Gary Shadforth from Arcadia Sustainable Design to begin the design and planning process for our Kitchen Garden. Gary will be coming in on Friday 24th May at 9am to meet with parents who wish to look at the current designs and provide feedback. We will meet in the library. We will then be sharing our designs with students to gather their feedback and ideas as well.

Victorian Curriculum- NEW Mathematics 2.0

The new Victorian Mathematics Curriculum v2.0 is here, and will be implemented at MVPS this year. The revised mathematics curriculum streamlines teaching, learning, assessment and reporting processes. The number of content descriptions in Foundation (prep) to Level 10 has reduced from 286 to 257, and they are clearer and easier to understand and sequence. The achievement standards have also been refined and clarified to help teachers assess student learning more effectively.

The 3 previous strands of ‘Number and Algebra’, ‘Statistics and Probability’, and ‘Measurement and Geometry’ have been separated into 6 individual strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. Some of the enhancements of the new Mathematics 2.0 are:
- Level descriptors easier to understand with specific examples
- Based more on the maths problem solving models, less rote learning
- Increase in student agency; opportunities for students to choose the strategy they use to solve the problem
- Less descriptors

Our teachers have been taking part in professional learning with our maths consultant Renee from Mathematics Association of Victoria (MAV). Our Learning Specialist Ms Stephaine Pollard and Maths Leader Ms Laura Crothers have also been supporting staff with implementing the new curriculum into team planning and assessments.

For our semester 1 reports, teachers will be assessing against the new Mathematics 2.0 curriculum. We will share more information on reporting in our next newsletter.

Education Week

There has been a buzz around MVPS this week with all of the fun and engaging events that have been happening for Education Week.

It was great to see so many families at our Open Night exploring this year's theme of ‘Spotlight on STEM’, which highlights the importance of Science, Teachology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM) in our everyday lives, in the classroom and beyond.

The rest of the week has been jammed packed. Here are some of the events that we hosted:
- Students who have piano lessons with Jenny from Music World performed in a piano recital.
- We hosted over 130 students from across Victoria, who took part in the Chess Ideas Tournament.
- Today we had the first of three Open Streets. Our students had a wonderful time riding through an obstacle course and over the jumps. There are still 2 more Open Streets sessions on 23rd and 30th of May; make sure you come on down and try it out!

Education Support Personnel Day

Education Support Day is celebrated on 16th May each year. It is a day to honour and recognise the extraordinary contribution education support staff make to our school. We surprised our ES team with a surprise lunch and students from each grade presented each team member with a thank you card. Our Inclusion Team is so hard working and dedicated to helping all of the students and teachers at MVPS; they are the heartbeat of our school.

Cross Country

Well done to all of the students who represented MVPS at the District Cross Country last week. All team members showed lots of confidence and gave their all! An admirable mention to Lailah in 3/4 and Em in 5/6 for making it into Divisions on the 23rd May. MVPS will be cheering loudly for you both! Good Luck Lailah and Em!

Can deposit scheme-class comp

Our Green Team is running another competition this term and the grade which raises the most money through the can deposit scheme will win a prize!
We are encouraging children and their families to take their cans/bottles to the Oakleigh depot directly and scan our MVPS code, then bring your receipt to your teacher to add to the tally.
This term the PA will be giving everyone in the winning class a pancake parlour voucher! We’ve already raised over $430! Happy recycling everyone!

Assembly

We look forward to seeing you all at our next Assembly on Friday 24th May at 2:45pm. 3/4J will be on stage to present an item to the MVPS community.

Our Book Fair is coming up soon….YAY!.

Each class will have the opportunity to preview the books and fill in wish lists, prior to the fair opening.

There will be a wide range of quality books to select from, and as always, a bargain section.
All purchases from the fair go towards earning FREE books for our school library.
You can purchase books in person (EFTPOS/cash) or order online using your child’s wish list.
So, kids it’s time to do some extra jobs around the house so you can spend your pocket money!
Of course, for the fair to run smoothly, we will be asking for some volunteers to help…more to come.
Looking forward to seeing you at the fair.

The program is in place to assist families who may need some extra support from time to time. Should anyone require some additional support such as meals, second-hand uniforms, or assistance with pick ups/drop offs then you are able to make confidential requests by emailing MVPS Principal Amy Tinetti or emailing FOMV directly at fomv@outlook.com.au

FOMV is also seeking new helpers to join the database. If you have the capacity to be on the FOMV database, please email fomv@outlook.com.au and specify the types of assistance you can provide.

Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme

MVPS is now registered to receive donations through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme. Together we can make a positive difference to our environment and our school community. We encourage all MVPS Families to return eligible bottles/cans to the Oakleigh Return It Depot (Oxford St, Oakleigh). Once your donations have been fed through the machine click on ENTER SCHEME ID and scan our school barcode (attached), and your donation will be made to the school. Keep your receipt and give it to your teacher when we return to school and the winning class at the end of each term will receive a class prize! To check eligibility of containers just look for the 10c mark or visit cdsvic.org.au
