Could your state lose vaccination choice?

October 6, 2016

Happy Fall! We are back to work and school, and buzzing with energy about what's most important to us. One of these topics is mandatory vaccination. People want to know if what happened in California could happen in their state.

CA SB277

WHAT HAPPENED IN CALIFORNIA?

California no longer has vaccination choice. This year, it joined West Virginia and MIssissippi as one of three states that does not allow families to object to mandatory vaccination for deeply held personal or religious beliefs. SB 277 was signed into law last year and became effective on 7/1/16.

Options are dramatically shrinking for California parents who choose not to give their children some or all of the 30 mandated vaccine doses required for day care and school admission:

Get a medical exemption
Keep kids home (private daycare/homeschool)
Move

Read here for more information including questions about access to special ed and related services specified in an IEP (cannot be denied per the Sabrow decision) and children grandfathered through the end of their current "grade span."

Parents are not happy to put it mildly. California governor Jerry Brown acknowledged this with a signing letter that explicitly upholds the medical exemption.

But it will not be so simple. Last month, we learned that an outspoken proponent of choice, Dr. Bob Sears, is fighting for his license. This seasoned pediatrician is accused of medical negligence involving a medical exemption. This will have a chilling effect on the willingness of other doctors to write exemptions, even further narrowing the alternatives for California's parents.

WILL THIS HAPPEN IN YOUR STATE?

Not if people who care about this issue get together and get involved now, before legislation starts moving.

If your state is one of the 47 others that offer a philosophical and/or religious exemption, you might want to pay attention to what's happening in New Jersey.

In 2008, over 700 citizens rallied in Trenton to protest four new mandated vaccines, including the first in the nation flu shot. The media and politicians took notice.

But time has passed. It has been 8 years since New Jersey gathered in large numbers to express support for vaccination choice.

New Jersey's religious exemption has recently come under attack. Informed citizens pushed back hard last year but special interests are becoming more vocal that parents should not have the right to decide. Will parents rise up again today? With critical elections upcoming, legislators need to be reminded that we vote. Political developments taking place in 2017 will likely set the stage for one of the biggest battles to come.

GET VACCINATION CHOICE OUT OF THE CLOSET

It's not easy to talk about vaccines. Everything about the topic is controversial, from safety and effectiveness to your right to decide. People will question your parenting, your sanity, your values, and your intelligence. You can read the comments in this Star Ledger article for a feel for the heated debate in New Jersey. This is occurring in every state in the country.

The truth is, there are many legitimate reasons that concerned citizens are seeking to become better informed. We are in the awkward "in between" stage when something is in the process of becoming known. We want to learn about the issue in community, with people who are knowledgeable, respectful, and brave.

It's time again to bring together large numbers who care about this issue.

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN US ON JANUARY 24, 2017

Fearless Parent™ is filling a community theater in Red Bank, New Jersey with 400 likeminded people, including parents, professionals, and exhibitors.
