As of June 2016 assisted suicide became legal in Canada and provinces are now required to create provincial laws to reflect the new federal legislation, Bill C-14.
Ontario has put forward its proposal in the form of Bill 84. Unlike other provinces however, Ontario's bill does not include conscience protection for physicians and medical professionals.
The single regulator of the medical profession in Ontario, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), is forcing doctors to ignore their conscience or to act in violation of it in their new policy on doctor conscience rights. Bill 84 does nothing to appropriately respond to the CSPO policy that doctors must provide effective referrals for assisted suicide if they refuse to perform the ’service' themselves.
Physicians who are morally or conscientiously opposed to assisted suicide are not only opposed to performing assisted suicide themselves; They also have deeply-held beliefs that prohibit them from being involved in the deliberate and intentional taking of a person’s life. To them, referring a patient to a physician who will perform the act equates to participation in the process.
Doctors who refuse to give "effective referral" will either be forced to violate their fundamental beliefs or face discipline by CPSO. Furthermore, Ontario may also require long-term care facilities and religious hospitals to allow assisted death on their premises.
Will you join us in demanding that conscience protection for health-care workers and facilities be included in Ontario's Bill 84?
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
We are asking for your help in calling for an amendment to Bill 84 that would protect conscience rights of Ontario's healthcare professionals. Here is what you can do to help:
1) PRAY:
Please pray that Canadians would refuse to accept a culture of death and would completely reject assisted suicide. Please pray for a revival of healing and salvation all across the land so that those who are sick and elderly would experience true hope amidst their hardship. Please pray that doctors, nurses, and all medical professionals would come out against assisted suicide in a strong and united way and that government officials at all levels would realize their error and amend or altogether scrap legalized assisted suicide in Canada.
