"Hawkwind"

We are excited to present a solo show of the expressive and dream-like oil paintings of Seattle artist Beth Kehoe, who portrays the vulnerability of humans in the wilderness and in those unguarded moments spent alone. Through intuition and gestural strokes of paint, she interprets her decades of experience backpacking solo in the Pacific Northwest into sensitive works that explore the mystery and drama of interacting with the natural world. The artist states, "These paintings are about life's experiences intersecting with the moments that we spend alone. My aim is to entice the viewer with works that are direct and beautiful, disturbing and quiet."

Kehoe spent twenty years as a nationally collected ceramic artist before returning to school to become a painter, graduating in 2015 from the Gage Academy of Arts Contemporary Figure Painting Atelier in Seattle. She has exhibited her paintings mostly in Seattle and northern Washington State, and has been juried into the Au Naturel group show at Clatsop Community College three times since 2016.

KKaiser-Horizon11-24x24-ac-575

"Horizon 11," acrylic on wood panel by Karl Kaiser

In the Alcove, Portland artist Karl Kaiser exhibits Horizontal Dimensions, abstracted interpretations of landscape with an emphasis on the horizon line. His signature encaustic paintings are lush and vibrant, with thick layers of pigmented beeswax adding luminous depth. He manipulates the wax with various techniques to evoke the natural world and uses a torch as a paintbrush. He'll also be showing some of his acrylic paintings, which carry on the themes of horizon and landscape.

Kaiser exhibits throughout Oregon and sometimes further afield; his encaustic paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

A Trunk Show of Jewelry, Sculpture & Gems...

TPorter-Batwing

A Collection from the Collective Unconscious is a trunk show of art jewelry, small sculpture and fabulous gemstones featuring Astoria artist Tabor Porter in collaboration with Theodore Pizanis, a gem dealer from San Francisco who is his long time source. This show will open at 3:00 on Saturday, August 10, just ahead of Artwalk, and continue through 8:00 pm.

Porter draws inspiration from his decades long habit of collecting objets d'art: the vintage, the arcane, the low-brow, the exquisite. He finds joy in both extraordinary curios and the everyday knickknacks that are part of cultures around the world. With the eye of an artist and skills of a metalsmith he creates delightful and improbable collectibles like no other.

Porter’s collection will remain on view through September 10. Pizanis deals in unusual gems and will have a special selection for this show available through this weekend only.

TPorter-Reliquary

This reliquary with gems and coins combines metalsmithing with assemblage.

September 14 – October 8, 2019

Astoria artist Andie Sterling exhibits a new body of transparent, abstract linescape paintings on aluminum. "In a study of the light and color within each rolling ripple and wave, this work aims to capture singular moments on the water standing still in time," according to the artist. "The rich color palette is inspired by sunset reflections and the illumination within the waters in the golden hour." Astorians are familiar with her recently finished public mural in the Thirteenth Street Alley.
