Jay Phelps Quartet

JPQ is a group of young musicians dedicated to contemporary Jazz music. They are playing jazz today with a clear understanding of what is both modern and traditional. Frequently, this fresh and exiting band mixes their set with original compositions from the band leader and some arranged standard material. Upcoming shows will preview new music from Phelps’ highly anticipated 2nd album. Definitely one of hottest new bands in the UK today.

Projections: Of Miles

"This was no pale imitation of well-worn numbers from the trail blazing 'Kind of Blue' album. Each musician had chosen lesser-known tunes from Miles’s catalogue for the band to reinterpret. As you might expect after two months on the road, the band sounded tight, and the empathy between the musicians was palpable." -Steve Waring

Jay Phelps has put together an all-star line up to re-arrange and perform the wonderful music of Miles Davis spanning over 4 decades.

Joining Jay on the front line of the tour earlier this year was American Alto saxophone star Logan Richardson and British star Soweto Kinch on tenor. The rhythm section consisted of three of the busiest men in the business, Benet Mclean - piano, Tim Thornton- bass and Empirical drummer Shane Forbes. Phelps has always cited Davis as one of his greatest inspirations and aims to breathe new life into his music with this brand new project. Definitely a not-to-be-missed show.

Trumpeter Jay Phelps is at the forefront of the young and creative generation of jazz musicians in the UK, with an instantly recognizable warm and projecting tone.

At aged 17, Jay emigrated from his native Vancouver to London determined to immerse himself in the jazz scene and immediately attracted the notice of Gary Crosby who offered him work with Jazz Jamaica, Nu Troop and, in 2002, the opportunity to be a Tomorrow’s Warrior. Citing Louis Armstrong, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown and Miles Davis as his main influences, Jay went on to create and co-lead the young and hip jazz sensation Empirical, where he spent two years touring major festivals and events, while garnering worldwide media attention that UK jazz musicians hadn't enjoyed for years. Jay has performed and recorded with a veritable who's who of both UK and international jazz artists such as Courtney Pine, Andrew Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Brown, John Hendricks, Nasheet Waits, George Benson, Jamie Cullum, Sir John Dankworth, Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Charlotte Church, Hugh Masakela and Jazz Jamaica. In 2012 Jay took Wynton Marsalis' chair in the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra with his epic, historical Congo Square suite at the Barbican.

Jay Phelps is recording a new album due for release in 2016.
