Olympic Medalist Novlene Williams-Mills to be honored at the United Nations
New York, NY ― Jamaican elite athlete, Novlene Williams-Mills will be honored at an event at the United Nations as a role model of a successful rural woman with a positive health message who battled cancer at the peak of her athletic career and went on to her greatest athletic triumphs.
The title of the event, “Any Girl Can: Celebration of Novlene Williams-Mills from Cancer Survivor to IAAF World Champion and Olympic Games Medalist,” is consistent with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically, Goal 5, Empowerment of Women and Girls and Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being, with sports as a cross-cutting issue.
Perseverance has been the hallmark of Williams-Mills’ remarkable life. Growing up in a small village on the north coast of Jamaica, she worked tirelessly to become a world-class athlete, her efforts leading to successfully winning bronze, silver and gold medals as part of Jamaica’s women’s track team. At the peak of her career, she fought to overcome sustained bouts of breast cancer, and now, at age 35, mentors young female athletes, provides school supplies to children’s hospitals and lectures about the importance of getting health services. Her mantra is: “Find hope no matter how hard the battle gets.”
To honor Ms. Williams-Mills and to recognize her as a role model of a successful rural woman with a positive health message, a special award luncheon and panel discussion will be held on March 13th in the Delegates Dining Room at United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan.
