New Red, White, and Blue Flag Quilts!

Hello Friends!

Well, as a sure sign of summer-on-its-way, I've got piles of red, white, and blue fabric scattered all over my sewing room! It looks like an explosion in a flag factory.

Before we dive into that, a huge apology for a wrong link in last week's newsletter. Here is the correct link to the Poolside Tote bag tutorial.

Wouldn't you know it, I got interrupted twice as I was proofreading the newsletter right before hitting send. I'm still getting used to working with everybody around me all. of. the. time. I kind of feel like I haven't had a consistent coherent train of thought for months.

Thanks for bearing with me and my mistakes. xo

All right! Back to sewing!

Here's a little preview of one of the red, white, and blue projects I'm working on.

I've loved making flag quilts for years - I think I made my first 15 years ago. Not just US flags either - I've made also Irish, Norwegian, and Taiwanese flags to name a just a few.

I've had an idea for an American Flag quilt kicking around in my brain for a few years now and this is the year I'm finally getting it done!

This week for the Riley Blake classic block challenge, we're talking about Bear Claw Quilt Blocks.

Would you believe this is the first time I've ever made this timeless block?

Here are my 12" and 6" blocks. (I decided to just make a single 'paw' block for my 6" x 6" blocks.)

I've got links to the tutorial plus lots of other pretty Bear Claw quilt inspiration to share.

In other summer-inspired patriotic fun this week, Amy Chappell of Ameroonie Designs stopped by to share these flag inspired mini quilt/mug rugs.

The piece-and-quilt-as-you-go method makes this little project come together so quickly.

Plus, they're perfect for using up scraps!

This week I was the guest on the Craft Industry Alliance podcast hosted by Abby Glassenberg.

The Craft Industry Alliance is for craft professionals looking to grow and support their businesses. Abby provides a great service supporting and cheerleading those creative folks who share their gifts and talents and inspire so many of us.

The first half of my interview with Abby is a little bit of the Diary of a Quilter origin story. The second half we talk a little more about the business side of blogging, working with social media, and the quilting industry.

Here's a little view of what my sewing space looks like currently.

I pulled out my red, white, and blue bolts of my past fabric collections. I love mixing them together.

As you can see, it's not just US flags that I'm working on! I'm also in the process of making a new crop of Union Jack quilt blocks. I'm getting ready to rewrite the pattern for this quilt. I'm totally smitten with how this is coming together!

Hopefully Monday I can get in some time to stitch up both sets of flags!

In the meantime, I hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend (if you're here in the US.) I love this holiday - for some reason I really love visiting cemeteries. And I love remembering and paying tribute to the many - family members included - who sacrificed so much for me to have this life.

I'm also so excited that we can get together with some extended family (spread out outside at least) and feel a little bit of a sense of normalcy. Bring on the BBQ!

Wishing you all a happy weekend!

Amy
