Many thanks to Bradford Elementary School in Westerly for hosting our successful launch event! Speakers included our CEO, Raymond Studley; our board Chairman, Mayor Scott Avedisian; and Senate Minority Leader Dennis L. Algiere. The new service starts Nov. 13, 2015.

RIPTA LAUNCHES PILOT PROGRAM IN HOPE VALLEY

RIPTA was excited to be joined by elected officials and community leaders in the Westerly-Hope Valley region when we announced a pilot program that will offer a new public transportation option in that part of the state.

The new service, which initially will operate midday on Fridays only, will serve locations between parts of Westerly and Hope Valley village that are currently not serviced by existing RIPTA routes. With stops at local stores and the Wood River Health Services center, the new transit service is intended to give local residents an opportunity to run necessary errands or take care of medical appointments. The pilot program is scheduled to start on Friday, November 13, 2015.

The service also represents an opportunity for RIPTA to maximize its resources by using one of the passenger vans from its RIde program during a window of time when that vehicle is in between trips. The RIde program, which is provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is a reservation-based, door-to-door service for people with disabilities. RIPTA currently has a 16-passenger RIde vehicle in the Westerly-Hope Valley area with some “down” time between 9am and 2pm on Fridays. RIPTA will now use that vehicle to travel from the Westerly Train Station to Main Street in Richmond, and back, during that time frame.

The service will begin on November 13, 2015 and will be free for the first two Fridays to help residents get familiar with it. RIPTA is very grateful to the Legislators and community leaders who worked with us on this project.

RIPTA IN THE COMMUNITY

TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY

RIPTA is partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for their Tie One On For Safety Red Ribbon Awareness campaign. Some of the most dangerous days of the year on our nation’s roadways are between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That is why every holiday season MADD asks you to put a MADD red ribbon in a visible location on your vehicle as a reminder to always designate a non-drinking driver.

RIPTA Bus Drivers and employees will wear red ribbons beginning Monday, November 16 to raise awareness to this public awareness project.

RETHINK YOUR RIDE

Commuter Resource RI will be participating in 4 upcoming benefits fairs in November! These benefits fairs give CRRI great opportunities to promote RIPTA services, pass programs, carpooling and alternative mode travel to a high volume of employees, faculty, students, and staff at each festive event.

These all day events are excellent venues for CRRI to persuade individuals to get out of their single occupancy vehicle and to try and alternative mode of travel. One –on –one trip planning, bus scheduling information, and on-line information are some of the things shared with individuals looking to save commuting dollars, expand commute options, or simply just to stop by and say hello.
