IN THE NEWS

This summer, Wells Fargo gave video cameras to Grass + Grit Farm to document their multi-species livestock operation, and their editorial team interviewed farmers Maddie Morley, Benjamin Roberts and James Walton. This week, Grass + Grit is featured on Wells Fargo's website as a prime example of how their organization's philanthropy is helping communities thrive.

Grass + Grit are participants in our Hudson Valley Farm Business Incubator, located in New Paltz, NY, and Wells Fargo is a major funder. We couldn't be more proud of Maddie, James and Ben, all three of whom are former Glynwood apprentices. Be sure to say hello to them at the Beacon Farmers Market.

Too Good to Waste

Glynwood hosted a special workshop last month for Hudson Valley chefs as part of our educational sponsorship of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. Eric Gabrynowicz (Restaurant North) and Steven Satterfield (Miller Union), both renowned in their field and honored by the James Beard Foundation, shared their strategies for food waste reduction and maximizing profit through full utilization of ingredients. Here (see video), Satterfield discusses how farmers play a key role in helping chefs turn potential food loss into flavor.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Farm Dinner - October 20

Farmers are on the frontline of unprecedented environmental challenges, experimenting with adaptive strategies for producing more food with fewer natural resources, in a changing climate. The topography of the Hudson Valley is particularly well suited for raising animals on pasture, a practice that improves soil health, closely imitates natural life cycles and maximizes land use.

Pastured protein also tastes better, and is healthier for us, for the animal, and for our planet. Evan Hanczor (Egg, Locanda Verde) returns for the third consecutive year as chef for our October Farm Dinner, when he will prepare a multi-course meal showcasing our pastured meat and Certified Organic produce. Our special guest for the evening is Laura Lengnick, farmer, educator, community activist and author of Resilient Agriculture: Cultivating Systems for a Changing Climate. Tickets are now available.

Volunteer Dirt Days

Assist our vegetable team with the necessary maintenance of our crops, while gaining hands-on experience. Our next volunteer Dirt Day is September 25, when the veggie crew will be threshing this year's crop of Hank's Xtra Special Baking Bean, the star of our inaugural seed grow-out last year.

Anyone and everyone is welcome! Dirt Days are on Sundays and start at 1:00pm at our Farm Store/CSA pick-up. For more information, contact Jarret Nelson directly.

Cider Week NYC: October 21 - 30

The 6th annual Cider Week NYC lasts 10 days in various locations throughout the city, connecting cider makers from New York State - and select pioneering “guest cideries” outside the state - to buyers from top restaurants, bars, and retail shops, as well the general public. The success of Glynwood's Cider Project has galvanized a regional craft cider industry in the Hudson Valley that continues to grow exponentially. In addition to sponsoring Cider Week since its inception, we helped to establish the first-ever New York Cider Association this year and hold a seat on its inaugural Board of Directors.
