30 Spring + Easter Sewing Ideas and Ways to Help with Covid-19

Hello Friends!

Happy National Quilting Day!

It's really a thing! Even the Metropolitan Museum in New York said so. I hope you can find a minute or two to celebrate in these bizarro times!

Who else is in the mood for spring??! Man, I just need some sunshine and warm weather so we can get outside more.

Yesterday I put together a list of some of my favorite Spring and Easter sewing projects and ideas from around the web.

There's a variety of fabric baskets, Easter decorations and accessories, as well as patchwork and foundation paper-piecing quilt projects.

Something for everyone if you're looking to get your spring mojo going.

This week I finished my first "Quarantined Quilter" project - finishing up the Pemberley Economy Block quilt that I started at the beginning of the year.

It felt good to get something finished.

This post includes a link to the Economy Quilt Block tutorial (with a free printable PDF version) if you want to make your own. They're such a fun way to play with fabric combinations.

Ways to Help during the Covid-19 Quarantine:

Sewers (sewists?) have the best hearts. They're ready to jump into action where there is a need. With the concerns of available medical supplies during this crisis, many are making efforts to make handmade Face Masks to be used in an emergency should medical grade masks run out or to preserve medical grade masks for the situations that are most dire.

As will ALL charitable sewing, before expending lots of time and energy, please find a place in and check with local entities to know their specific needs and specifications for sizes, fabric types, etc. for that recipient.

If you want to help, here are some resources you can use:

SewCanShe has links to 5 different face mask tutorials.

This version is designed by a Nurse and doesn't require elastic or wire of any kind, if (like me) you don't have those supplies on hand.

1 Million Masks has another simple pattern that does not require elastic.

Jenny Doan of Missouri Star shares a video tutorial for making a facemask here.

Another simple face mask version by Kid Giddy found here.

Again, these will not protect from Covid 19 but will help prevent the additional spread of germs in a case of last resort.

(I know there are lots of different feelings and specifications on this. I tried to research whether this was a legitimate need before I shared, and I found enough credible sources saying the need is legitimate. I don't pretend to be a medical professional and offer this information in good faith. Again, before you sew, please confirm the needs and specifications of the entity where you plan to donate.)

How are you all holding up?

After our first full week of isolating at home, I've learned some things.

I am feeling the whole range of emotions – sometimes within a very short time frame. I shared what I'm feeling in more detail here, but to sum it up, I'm trying to just allow myself to feel what I feel, to take life one day at a time, and to not get weighed down by unrealistic expectations. And to allow everyone to process this situation in their own way.

Don't be hard on yourself. Do the best you can and give yourself (and others) lots of grace.

Hang in there friends. We're all in this together. xo

Love,

Amy
