Daisy Yellow Newsletter #8

Inspiration can fly into your life from different directions. The other morning, I was reading an interior design magazine and on a whim, decided to use architectural images as reference for pages in pencil & gouache. I've not tried this before and was quite thrilled with the playful finished pages.

And so this has been a busy month; I've been filming a new abstract painting workshop called Tiny Museum and released a new issue of the Zine. The kids go back to school in a matter of days and with that, a flurry of activity, meetings & paperwork!

Tiny Museum {New Workshop!}

We'll go on a treasure hunt for inspiring ideas and create tiny abstracts with watercolor or gouache paint. Pop over to the blog for a video peek! I've also re-opened Watercolor Playground and Painted Paper Paradise after a few month hiatus. PS. Early Bird Discounts! Wouldn't that be a fun treat?

Creative Sparks

1. Taste test different types of dark chocolate. Sketch each package in your journal and document your findings. Rate and rank the package design as well as the chocolate.
2. Sort something in your house by color, something typically organized in another manner. For example, boxes of tea, books or linens.
3. Add a few retro toys & jigsaw puzzles to your art work space or home office. These act as functional & colorful displays.
4. Draw a map of an imaginary island and practice your spatial reasoning by drawing it from above, as if in a helicopter, and from the side, as if in a sailboat.
5. Get 5 index cards. Set up an iTunes playlist with 1-2 songs from each of 5 different musical genres such as classical, cuban, jazz, country, disco, etc. {roughly 5-10 minutes per genre}. Doodle one index card per genre. How did the music impact what you drew or created?

The Daisy Yellow Zine

Issue #14 of the DY Zine is now available - a digital magazine with 23 pages of colorful artwork & ideas to get you thinking about art journaling and your creative process from a big picture {pun intended} perspective.

There's a special issue of the Zine called 101+ Ideas for Index Card Art. I went through all of the handmade index card art that I've created between 2011-2015 and curated a selection of vivid imagery and actionable ideas for doing art in a small format.

As part of the Quirky Dutch Summer series at Marit's Paper World, I contributed a video tutorial for drawing & painting a rainbowy mandala flower.

Oh! And I was interviewed by Connie of Dirty Footprints Studio. We talked about creativity and art-making and I was nervous!!! Watch the video interview here.
