This Week's Highlights

I considered sending a Merry Christmas email out on Christmas day. Then I found myself deleting all the Merry Christmas emails from businesses that landed in my inbox. And decided to save you the trouble. We do hope that your Christmas was very merry!

As 2016 comes to a close, we'd like to thank all of our students and customers who have made this year so much fun! We appreciate your friendship, camaraderie, conversation and shenanigans.

We have several new classes up on the schedule! If you don't see one you like, stay tuned, we'll add more! Feel free to let us know what you would like to learn!

We wish each and every one of you a happy new year full of learning, discovery, love, friendship, adventure, dancing, success and prosperity in whatever it is you choose to do. Make it a good one.

See you on the dance floor!
Anne and Andy

Great for new dancers and experienced dancers alike to not only improve their two-stepping, but their spins for this and other dances.

WEST COAST SWING
WCS102 - Beginning West Coast Swing with Andrew Walls
Date: Thu 1/5/2017 - 2/9/2017
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 12/29
Smooth and stylish, West Coast Swing is danced to blues, R&B, funk, pop, and even country music, making it not only the most popular style of social dance across the nation, but the fastest growing. Learn West Coast Swing from two of the best and most accomplished swing dancers and teachers in the midwest, Anne and Andy Walls.

WCS102 introduces the footwork, timing, and lead/follow technique of the basic eight-count west coast swing patterns. The patterns we'll teach and use in this class are to develop good skills in distinguishing between 6 and 8 count patterns, which is an important fundamental skill for any west coast swing dancer, all while exploring variations popular on social dance floors around the world.

WCS102 has no pre-requisite dance knowledge or skill level and as a foundational class, it covers beginner to intermediate knowledge in west coast swing. We offer three separate foundation classes for west coast swing (WCS101, 102, and 103) and they may be taken in any order as they all cover foundational elements of west coast swing dancing and are all appropriate for beginning dancers to experienced dancers, but all three classes are required before any intermediate classes should be taken.

Because of the nature of the 100 level west coast swing classes, dancers of all levels are encouraged to not only take all the foundation classes, but we also encourage repeat attendance of the classes as each time you will gain more understanding and skill in the fundamentals of west coast swing, plus the patterns we cover in any single class will vary each time you take the class as our goal is to teach the fundamental elements of the dance, which are accomplished through a variety of patterns.

WEST COAST SWING
WCS201 - Intermediate West Coast Swing with Andrew Walls
Date: Thu 1/5/2017 - 2/9/2017
Time: 7:30 pm - 8:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 12/29
This class series will build on basic techniques of west coast swing and introduce the concept of scrolling patterns, plus we'll work on pivot technique to improve both leader's and follower's ability to execute spins within patterns.

A great chance to hone your ability to lead and follow west coast swing plus look at concepts that build beyond your basics! This class requires the completion of WCS101, WCS102, and WCS103. Evaluation can be scheduled to determine eligibility.

EAST COAST SWING
ECS112 - East Coast Swing with Matt Whitford
Date: Mon 1/9/2017 - 2/13/2017
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 1/2
East Coast Swing is an intuitive and easy to learn, fast dance, danced usually to big band or contemporary music that 'swings.' This class will focus on Single-Time rhythm and 6-count patterns that make up the core of Single-Time East Coast Swing, AKA the Jitterbug.

This class is a basic class, perfect for beginning dancers, but will build to different patterns than those covered in ECS111.

We'll focus on building a strong swing foundation that will help you with learning charleston and lindy hop in later classes. No partner or previous dance experience necessary!

EAST COAST SWING
ECS121 - Beginning LIndy Hop with Matt Whitford
Date: Mon 1/9/2017 - 2/13/2017
Time: 7:30 pm - 8:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 1/2
Basic Lindy Hop patterns and moves. Learn to change rhythms from the basic single-time "boogie walk" to a triple-time rhythm, plus change from 6 to 8 count basic patterns. Will show you how to integrate lindy moves like the lindy circle and basic throwout with basic jitterbug repertoire. Plus learn to differentiate between basic rock steps, and lindy swivels. Great companion class to ECS120, though ECS120 is not a requirement for this class. This is the modern incarnation of the historic lindy hop invented at the historic Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NY, the namesake of the facility these classes will be taught!

Cost is only $65 per person for all 6 weeks of any of our series. Plus, if you register at least one week in advance, you'll save 20% and only pay $52!!

All Classes: No partner required, singles, couples and LGBT friendly!

Be the Best You: 5 Steps to Better New Year's Resolutions

www.usnews

Tips for making New Year's Resolutions you're more likely to keep.

By Lylah Alphonse | Managing Editor, US News Dec. 30, 2013

The New Year is all about making resolutions. But while 45 percent of Americans say they usually make them, just 8 percent of Americans manage to keep them, according to recent data from University of Scranton researchers and the Journal of Clinical Psychology. Losing weight, getting organized, spending less and saving more are the top promises we make (and break) at the end of each year. Here are five tips for making New Year's Resolutions that you're more likely to keep.

Set achievable goals. Losing 25 pounds may not be within your control, but opting to eat more healthily can be. Getting a promotion may be up to your boss, but learning more transferable skills is something you can vow to do yourself. "Be real when you make a resolution," suggests Elisa Zied, a registered dietician and the author "Younger Next Week." Rather than commit to running a marathon, "Set yourself up for success and map out your course by making appointments with yourself to be active. If you treat your goals like set appointments, you're more likely to achieve them."

Reach out to others. Let your closest friends and family members in on your goals; they'll help hold you accountable, provide support when you feel your willpower starting to slip and serve as a sounding board when you need to figure out a problem. "Having a support network is crucial in achieving your goals," says Luke Landes of Consumerism Commentary.

Do unto yourself as you would do unto others. Yes, you read that correctly -- it's a twist on the Golden Rule, and something we tend to forget to do. "Consider resolving to treat yourself with just as much love and respect as you do your closest friends and relatives," Dr. Yoni Freedhoff writes at U.S. News & World Report. "Anytime you catch yourself beating up on your own normal human imperfections ... consider how you might counsel your loved ones were they in the exact same situation. Because you deserve to love and respect yourself too; no doubt, doing so will confer onto you tremendous health and life benefits."

Find ways to feel happier. Thousands of studies have shown that having an attitude of gratitude can make for positive change in your life. "Gratitude isn't passive reflection. It's active," says David DeSteno, a professor of psychology at Northeastern University in Boston. "And it's not about the past. It's there to help direct our behavior in the future." At the very least, it can make you feel happier -- and there are real physical and emotional benefits to being more upbeat. "You're 50 percent less likely to have a heart attack, you get sick less often, and you can be a lot more productive at work," points out Nataly Kogan, founder and chief happiness officer at Happier.com, where community members chronicle their daily happy moments, no matter how small. With a little practice, feeling happy can become a habit (check out Kogan's 21-day Happier Courses for inspiration). And happiness is contagious. "If you're happier," Kogan says, "You'll make the people around you happier, too."

Forget resolutions; pick a theme instead. Tired of making the same resolutions year after year? Instead of focusing on "lose 10 pounds" or "hit the gym more often," pick a theme like "activity," "movement" or "fitness" and strive toward that instead. "The theme should be a word that resonates with you and embodies something that has been missing from your daily life," advises Melinda Johnson, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "Instead of defining specific behaviors that you want to do, you simply keep your theme in mind and allow your days to unfold from there."
