Celebrating SA Heritage Day with our children

Each week DAKTARI welcomes 8 children to spend a week participating in our environmental education programme. During 2018, 373 children passed through our gates for this life changing experience.

heritage day 2019

September 24th marks SA’S s national Heritage Day where around the country people celebrate the many diverse cultures that make up our great land. The DAKTARI staff, volunteers and most importantly the children that week all celebrated in true SA style dressing up in traditional and colourful attire and enjoying a braai (barbecue) with some song and dance. A true inspiring and fun day was had by all.

Outreach ECO CLUB teaching valuable skills

Eagle-eyed readers may recall we recently launched our new ECO CLUB community outreach programme. The programme runs over a 6-week period, consecutively throughout the year where twice per week school aged youth from local communities attend the course.

The primary focus is on environmental and conservation based education however many valuable life skills are taught and learnt during the 6-week course. The importance of time management, basic social and people skills and public speaking to name but a few are covered. Noticeably and proud we are of the fact that we see improvement in self-esteem and confidence from the children during this course. Attendance figures and feedback from the children and schools have been a great indicator thus far that the programme is really enjoyable and impactful. If you would like to check out our fundraiser for the ending ceremony, you can do so here.

A big shout-out to Sausage Tree Safari Camp for hosting our weekly environmental education programme winners! Each week 1 child who attends the on-site environmental education programme at DAKTARI wins the award, always a tough choice for our volunteers to make it must be said. The deserved recipients of the award go on an end of term game drive where they get to see the majestic animals from an open vehicle, guided by an experienced ranger. This outing is truly a memorable experience for our children, many of them deciding they want to be game rangers and to protect our wildlife.

DAKTARI launches a new website

Our dedicated marketing manager and long-term volunteer Silke Gadeyne recently pressed the “go live” button that signalled the launch of DAKTARI’s brand-new website. Hundreds of hours of effort, amidst a few frustrations as can be expected, the odd tweak here and there until she excitedly spread the news that our site had been launched. For our readers eager to find out more about this wonderful organisation please visit the site by following this link or clicking the picture below. Thank you to all who gave of themselves to make this such a success.

DAKTARI welcomes Patience Moripa to the board

staff long terms 5

We are all extremely thrilled for Patience Moripa who at our 2019 Annual general Meeting was nominated to the board of directors. Patience currently manages the environmental education programme at DAKTARI and takes care of the children and the volunteer needs during their stay. Her dedication and passion to learn and her leadership skills made her an obvious choice. Patience is also an Environmental Monitor for the Kruger to Canyon (K2C) Biosphere reserve and was chosen as DAKATRI’s ambassador for K2C.

Long-term board members Mr. Wayne Merrifield and Mr. Greg Benn stepped down and we would like to thank them for their years of service.

Keep an eye out for #GivingTuesday 3rd December 2019

'#GivingTuesday' is a global day of giving promoted by GlobalGiving, a large online crowdfunding community that connects non-profit organisations with donors. On December 3rd, GlobalGiving will match a percentage of donations that DAKTARI receives on that day for our Environmental Education Program. Your generosity will assist us in impacting the lives of our children as we move into 2020. Remember to write down that day in your calendar to support DAKTARI. No donation is ever too small!
