GMU Center for the Arts Presents Mark Morris Dance Group March 1-2

MMDG trout

Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG), one of the most revered contemporary dance companies performing today, returns to their Northern Virginia home at George Mason University's Center for the Arts. This influential dance company performs to live music by the MMDG Music Ensemble in a diverse program that includes Little Britten, The Trout, a brand new work set to music from Schubert’s Trout Quintet, and another of Morris’ newest works, Numerator. Set to the music of Lou Harrison, Numerator, is described as “…dreamlike…surreal… with sharp, unexpected detours” (MassLive) and “dramatic poetry” (The New York Times). Don’t miss this spellbinding performance of dances created by Mark Morris, hailed as “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (The New York Times).

Performances are March 1 and 2 at 8 PM at GMU's Center for the Arts in Fairfax. For tickets, go online or call (703) 993-8888.

Dance for PD® is an internationally-acclaimed program of the Mark Morris Dance Group, conceived collaboratively with the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. The program offers award-winning dance classes for hundreds of people with Parkinson’s in New York City, and fosters classes in more than 300 communities in 25 countries around the world through a network of partners and teaching affiliates trained in the Dance for PD approach, including several established classes in the National Capital area.

In Dance for PD classes and performance projects, people with Parkinson's and their families and care partners are empowered to explore movement and music in ways that are refreshing, enjoyable, stimulating and creative. The Dance for PD teaching approach, supported by 38 peer-reviewed studies, is built on a fundamental premise: professionally-trained dancers are movement experts whose knowledge is useful to persons with PD. Dancers know all about coordinating and strengthening muscles, and about balance and rhythm. Dance for PD utilizes elements of technique, narrative, imagery, live music and community to develop artistry and grace while addressing such PD-specific concerns as balance, flexibility, coordination, isolation and depression.
