Conservative MP Michael Chong's private member bill, titled The Reform Act, passed through the Senate on June 22nd. After a long battle, which began in 2014, it finally passed with a vote of 38-14 and is now law.
The new law allows MPs to break ranks with their party's position when that position does not reflect their constituent's. This will enable MPs to more accurately represent those who have voted them into office rather than the party that they are a part of. It will also give MPs the ability to trigger a leadership review, vote to remove the party leader and replace them.
