Summertime Blues

Way back in 1994, Alan Jackson resurrected an old favorite entitled “Summertime Blues.” It’s all about the great injustice of being forced to work during what should be the lazy months of Summer! Well, I hope you’ve been able to take some time off over the Summer. If not, time is short! Better get started! We’re already saying hello to our old friend, August!

So, since Summer is slipping away and Fall is around the corner, I thought perhaps I should use this month’s article to say a few words about some Fall stuff…some up and coming Fall attractions!

First, beginning the first week of August, we will start a new series of sermons entitled “The Kingdom of God.” The kingdom of God (aka, the kingdom of heaven) was the central message of Jesus. It was the focus of is actions and his teachings. So, we will take three or four weeks to explore the topic that Jesus talked about almost all the time.

Then, beginning September 1st we will follow up our series on the kingdom of God with a series about the parables of Jesus. The series title will be “The Stories Jesus Told.” These stories are all descriptions of the kingdom of God. In fact, many of them begin with Jesus saying, “the kingdom of God is like…”

So, in August we will work on a definition of the kingdom of God and from the first of September till the beginning of Advent we will look at Jesus’ descriptions of the kingdom of God in his parables. This, by the way, will be a good time to bring your friends, especially the ones who want to learn more about the central message of the Christian faith.
Second, beginning Wednesday, August 28th we will launch our weekly Bible study. Each Wednesday we will host one Bible study group at 10:00 AM and another at 6:30 PM. So, if you work during the day but would like to participate in a Bible study, you can come in the evening! I won’t give away too much about the study now, but we will begin by talking about the overarching narrative of scripture and how the Jesus movement of the first few centuries fit into it (and how the church still does). It will be an informal study in which your questions and insights will be welcomed! I hope you can participate!

Down the road (after the first of the year) we will begin Confirmation classes for anyone interested in participating. The classes are not limited to young people. However, if we have adults interested in the classes, we will probably host separate classes for children and adults. The classes are for anyone who wants to understand the central teachings and doctrines of the Church. It would be helpful to have a list of everyone who would like to be a Confirmand, so we will have sign up sheets available soon.

Well, I think that just about covers our Fall (and New Year) attractions. I am looking forward to it! I hope you are! Meanwhile, do all you can to avoid the Summertime Blues! Maybe pull out the Alan Jackson CD (or ask Alexa to play it).

Blessings,
Pastor Rob

Consistory Notes…

Meeting Minutes

JULY 15, 2019

Present: Cristy Detter, Harry Hight, Larry Kiziah, Tommy Smith, Juanita Morrison, Gene Hoover, Connie Griffin, Ron Williams, Hank Mathis, Pastor Rob Helton
Prayer requests were made and the meeting opened in prayer.
A motion was made and seconded to accept the June minutes.

Pastor Rob presented his report. He continues to share communion with our homebound and visit our shut-ins and to schedule meetings with church members. Meeting with each church family is a slow process. He presented the idea of looking into area colleges to see if a college student may be able to participate in an internship with the church and work specifically with the youth.

Beginning August 28, Pastor Rob will meet on Wednesdays at 10am and 6:30pm for the weekly bible study.

Our worship service is in need of more people to read scripture and more youth to acolyte. The younger youth will begin to be trained by our senior youth on how to acolyte and then take over now that our senior youth are off to college.

The ice Cream Social was a success. It was one of the largest crowds we have ever had. There were approximately 85 people who attended.

Old Business:
A motion was made and seconded to contact an electrician and have the junction box evaluated to see if it needs to be rewired and waterproofed.

A general contractor will be contacted to evaluate the roof around the firewall that is believed to be the cause of the leak in the kitchen window and the estimated cost of removal and replacement of the pegboard soffit around the church. Other areas of need will also be evaluated.

Area heating and air companies will be contacted to provide an estimate for yearly cost for routine maintenance on our 8 units around the church.

The workday was a success and the church grounds look good. We are very thankful for all the help!!

New Business:
A retirement plan for St. Paul’s employees was presented to the consistory. A motion was made and seconded to accept the new retirement plan created on July 15, 2019. The plan was passed with a unanimous vote. The new plan will be added to the staff handbook.

Cindy S spoke to the Consistory about the need of a youth leader. She feels strongly that the youth are the future of our church and is vital to the growth of our church.

A motion was made and seconded to move consistory meetings to second Tuesday of each month. This will work better with Pastor Rob’s schedule as well as several members of the consistory.
The next meeting is scheduled for August 13, 2019.

Thank you for keeping us up to date on St. Paul's Financial Support to end of year. The remaining donation should be designated for our Pension Fund since we are "Retired Wycliffe" now. Thank you for your donation in May - we are so blessed. We are on a camping trip to Michigan and Seattle. God is enabling our Museum Director to grow with putting new members on Staff while we we are away. When we return there will be many opportunities to serve at JAARS Center in Waxhaw.
We thank you for the many years of faithful prayers and financial reports.

Amrita

It is now 100 deg. here in town, but God is good, and we are staying healthy and busy. Visited one of our Teams in the Foothills, had a Retreat with 65 people together from across India for training. These folks are blessed by times of corporate prayer, worship and teaching. They left encouraged and excited to continue the work of establishing the Kingdom in India. Church Planting is happening in this area and house churches are planting churches.
Amrita, our daughter has some good news for you all. I can say a few words and love to talk. Wanted to share the good news. "I am going to be a big sister in Dec."
Please keep us in your prayers this coming season. Many thanks!
