Give the Gift of Your Time and Talents

Become a FON Board Member

Friends of Northside (FON) is a parent organization that works to support the Northside community through fundraising and volunteerism. All parents and guardians are automatically members of FON. Board positions are available for those who would like to take a more active role.

FON's fundraising seeks to raise money with the goals of replacing lost funding from CPS, supporting the school’s mission, and maintaining and enhancing the learning experience for all NCP students. FON efforts include the Annual Appeal, Spring Benefit, and Cubby Walk Walkathon, among others.

FON also provides volunteers and hospitality to the NCP community. It plans social/educational programs, recruits volunteers for various NCP events such as Open House, distributes this weekly email communication, and maintains the student directory.

FON is seeking a volunteer to help write the This Week at Northside eblast. No experience required.

If you're interested in joining the board and/or helping with the eblast, please email Friends of Northside.

Parking Lot Safety and Procedures

Our NCP school parking lot is a busy place before and after school. Families dropping off and picking up students are asked to be mindful of both safety and courtesy. Please assist us by ensuring that traffic lanes stay clear during drop-off and pick-up times. Pulling over to the curb on the right as your student enters or exits your vehicle keeps students safe and traffic flow efficient.

Please remember that ALL VEHICLES MUST EXIT ONTO KEDZIE. You may enter the parking lot from Kedzie or Bryn Mawr, but regardless of where you enter, all cars must exit onto Kedzie. For the safety of our students and the rest of the Northside community, please do not exit onto Bryn Mawr.

Northside Spanish Students Attain National Recognition for Excellence

Congratulations to several Spanish students from Northside who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2019 National Spanish Examinations.

We are proud to announce that students from Northside earned a total of 75 gold, 94 silver and 49 bronze medals along with 40 honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 146,000 students participating in 2019.”

Students from Northside have a long history of high achievement on these exams, and this year, Northsiders won $2970 over all levels of Spanish! This is more than any other school (elementary and high) in Chicago and the suburbs!

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Northside Debate Caps Season with Cinderella Run at Nationals

At the national Tournament of Champions, seniors Magi Ortiz and Alex Pinheiro ended their careers with a remarkable run to elimination rounds to finish in the Top 20 of the entire country. The seniors were seeded #18 after preliminary debates, and lost an achingly close 2-1 decision in the first elimination round to North Star (NJ) to fall just shy of the Sweet Sixteen at debate’s version of March Madness.

Only about a dozen urban debate schools nationwide have ever managed to make it to elimination rounds at the tournament in its 50 years of existence. Since we compete against private school programs with debate budgets in the hundreds of thousands of dollars (that’s not hyperbole), getting that far is something that only a few dozen urban debaters have ever done (and only about 10 from Chicago schools specifically).

Making it more remarkable is that Alex and Magi began the tournament with a 1-2 record after the first three preliminary debates, meaning they won four straight elimination rounds to get to a 5-2 record in a nerdy version of a Karate Kid montage to make it to elims.

Adding to their success was the other Northside senior team of Kathy Martinez and Wasim Rahaman, who compiled a 4-3 record in prelims to fall one win shy of elimination rounds themselves and finish as the #40 team in the country. With tens of thousands of debaters across the country competing in our activity, to have two teams in the top 40 at the end of the year is perhaps even more unprecedented for a city school.

All four seniors received the debate equivalent of D1 offers from colleges including Northwestern, Michigan, Georgetown, Kentucky, USC, and others, making it an outstanding year for the entire senior class as some of them will be continuing their debate careers on the college circuit.
