Buddy and Rosey

Hi Member,

With everything else going on the last few weeks I haven't had the chance to update my current pet status. We've now officially adopted our 1st foster dog Buddy (top right) - he came to us 6 months ago with heartworm and after going through all the treatment we just couldn't let such a perfect gentleman leave. Then a month ago we welcomed Rosey our 2nd foster dog. She was only hours away from being euthanised so I couldn't help myself and agreed to foster her. From the photos I was sent, I was expecting a smallish, tan staffy but instead, she's a big, strong staffy cross with absolutely zero training - zip, zilch, nada!

Thankfully she absolutely loves people, dogs and is a very quick learner. And as I'm not exactly a dog training expert we're working together to learn some manners so she can be ready for her perfect forever home.

So what else has been happening this week?

I've checked in with Diederik Gelderman to find out how his new practice is going as he turns the sow's ear into a silk purse - you can find out where things are at 19 weeks down the track in the blog post below.

There's also a new Facebook Page to check out and support - Make Headway. It's been set up by one of our favourite guest bloggers Dr Cathy Warburton and it's dedicated to enhancing the well-being of veterinary teams.

What do people see when they use Google to search for information on veterinary practices in your area? Or even your practice specifically? Did you know Google allows you to have control over what is displayed for your business using 'Google My Business'? Ingrid at Heart Harmony Communications has put together another detailed, easy-to-follow guide to help you make the most of the information for your business.

Finally, you'll also find a featured post from Mark Opperman in which he explains how you can become an 'employer of choice' so the best employees come looking for you - imagine how awesome that would be!

Our aim is to help you - save time, connect & discover!

Enjoy your reading :)

What do people see on Google about your business?

The Beginner's Guide to Google My Business

By Ingrid Moyle, Heart Harmony Communications

As you may or may not know, Google offers a free Google listing to all businesses. Once set up, your listing then appears on the right-hand side of the Google search engine page when people are searching for businesses like yours on Google Search or Maps

You may assume that this information is auto-generated however Google My Business allows you to take ownership and control of the information that's displayed on Google about your business. For example, the image on the right is the carefully curated information that appears when you Google 'Heart Harmony Communications'.

Not sure if your practice has a listing already set up? Google your practice name and see if the panel comes up on the right-hand side of the Google Search.

No panel? Then click on this link and follow the steps to set yours up!

Want to become an employer of choice?

Become a Veterinary Employer of Choice

By Mark Opperman, CVPM

Imagine how great it would be if, rather than struggling to attract vets and nurses to join your practice, they came to YOU!

That's what being an 'employer of choice' is all about - having a reputation of being the best, not only in patient care, but also in how you treat your employees.

In this recent post by Mark Opperman, he discusses some of the common traits of 'employers of choice' (EoC) and invites you to see how your practice stacks up:

Work environment

Maintaining a positive and nurturing environment for your team.

Compensation

It's not just about paying better than anyone else, although EoC tend to pay better than average, it's also about reviewing the entire benefits package on offer.

Investment in Continuing Education

EoC understand the importance of continuing education and offer regular in-house and out-of-house CE - and they pay for it!

Communication

EoC have clear communication paths within the business and hold regular meetings between management and employees. They also develop effective two-way communication and employee performance reviews are an important part of the process.

Walking the Talk and Setting the Example

"A practice owner must be willing to do everything they ask their employees to do."

Vision

EoC know exactly what their business is all about and where it's heading. This vision is well communicated with the team and the team are given the guidance, tools and space to head in the right direction.

Fun

EoC understand the importance of developing a fun and enjoyable work environment. They not only know how to have fun, they also understand the importance of releasing stress.

The Whole Package

An EoC is the complete package - they tick off all of the boxes above and then some.

How many boxes can you tick?
