At last month's meeting Janice La Motta, the Project Director of HomeShare Woodstock, gave us a detailed explanation of this pilot program to match people in need of housing with homeowners. The idea is to bring together people who need housing but cannot afford the high priced apartments in the area, and seniors who wish to remain in their homes but have extra space and often have needs that are difficult to meet - such as work around the house or garden, getting a ride to the doctor, etc. The idea is that each can help the other. The program aims to take the uncertainty out of the process by creating a structure, including a no-obligation trial period and work exchange agreements. If a match is found, there is a 2 week trial before anyone moves in, and a written agreement for a one year commitment. Should there be problems Family of Woodstock will work with the participants to sort them out, and if necessary, terminate the agreement. The program is sponsored by Family of Woodstock and currently financed through a grant from NY Office for the Aging.
This arrangement has a history of working well in other parts of the country, alleviating anxiety, isolation and depression among seniors and helping the housing crisis.
