In this time of visible and unpredictable violence, please take care of yourselves. Please everyone, stay safe, hold your loved ones close, have compassion for those who don't have loved ones, and work for justice. As the wise Audre Lorde said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare."

Take care,
Lauren

Meet a teacher: Nasreen Alkhateeb

"Encouraging women and girls to find their voices, and helping to facilitating gender-based violence education, is the most gratifying energy I can give. It's not only your right to exist in a safe living and working environment, it is crucial for survival and growth. In addition to empowering students with Defend Yourself, I enable Digital Strategy by creating original content for social outreach."

Safe Bars for the win!

The NFL is backing sexual violence prevention to the tune of $10 million, and Safe Bars is one of the first to benefit from the initiative, called Raliance. Safe Bars, a project of Defend Yourself and Collective Action for Safe Spaces, trains bar and club staff how to intervene in unwanted sexual harassment.

A couple of weeks ago, we trained the staff at Churchkey in D.C., and they already used the skills -- and probably prevented a rape!

We want to make more of that happen. We plan to train at least 10 bars in D.C. this year, and train trainers in 15 cities around the country. If you want to bring us to your favorite nightspot, please get in touch!

Read more at the Safe Bars site, Upworthy, or Huffington Post.
