ADOPT A TURTLE NEST TODAY

Nesting season began in May and to date there have been almost 300 Loggerhead nests recorded by interns from Florida Gulf Coast University. In collaboration with FWC, volunteers are trained to monitor, protect nests and record the success of hatchlings on beaches throughout Florida.

You can support these efforts on Cayo Costa by adopting a nest. You will be sent information on your nest and the results of hatchlings. The Adopt a Nest program funds equipment needed to protect the nests from predators as well as supplies to keep our interns safe and comfortable while working remotely in hot and stormy weather. The photos below, provided by our Florida Gulf Coast University Volunteers captured a recent pre-dusk crawl. The Loggerhead dug and laid her nest at the edge of the dune. Per FWC guidelines, one must stay back 50' from a nesting turtle so as not to disturb them.

CAYO COSTA STATE PARK UPDATE

The bayside access to the park remains closed until further notice. The gulf side is open to private boats and the gulf side restroom is open for use and is located HERE Please pack out anything you may bring to enjoy a beach day.

According to park staff, the bayside dock remains in permitting for total replacement. Anticipated completion is early 2025.
Repairs continue in the maintenance area and ranger residences. The kayak shack at the bayside entrance has been replaced.
A brand new staff is on site and working hard to make repairs and place tables and fire rings in campground.

The Friends of Cayo Costa steering committee spent a day working on the island earlier this year. We recovered some program equipment belonging to our dedicated volunteers and moved the new kayaks back to their rack.
IF you'd like to join us on future workdays, you must be registered as a volunteer with the State. Click here to learn more.
