Hello, creatives!

It has been both a sad and uplifting week here in Charleston. Our community was shocked and horrified when nine people were gunned down after a Bible study at a historic black church in downtown Charleston. Like everyone in our city, I was moved to tears by such a terrible act of hate. And in the days following, I was moved to tears again. This time by the incredible response of our city – love, unity and forgiveness were the overwhelming messages. What a powerful example Charleston has been for the nation and the world. As our pastor at Seacoast church said last Sunday, “A man who thought he'd start a race war may have sparked a revival.”

Good can come from evil acts - and that is a beautiful message.

Let's be creative,
Holly

The Footlight Players opens its 84th season with “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” a musical based on the 1988 film of the same name. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" centers around two competing con men, living on the French Riviera. The performance runs Aug. 7-23 at the historic Footlight Players, 20 Queen St. in Charleston.

This past week Lowcountry AIDS Services has been hosting special HIV testing events to promote National HIV Testing Week. In working with this agency on its PR and marketing, I've realized just how many people don't know that AIDS still exists. Despite the fact medical advances mean people living with HIV and AIDS can manage their illness over a period of years, the number of new HIV infections has remained stable year after year. It's important to be educated about this illness and what you can do to help those in need.

The Write Stuff

Pick up the July/August issue of Charleston Living to read my profile on Charleston author Mary Alice Monroe. I had the privilege of tagging along for the photo shoot to see the amazing sea turtle mural that Monroe’s artist daughter painted at her beach home. If you haven’t read any of Monroe’s wonderful books, pick one up and toss it in your beach bag. You won’t be disappointed.

Coming July 1 – the summer issue of Traveler of Charleston. Read online or pick up a copy around the Charleston area. Get ideas for fun family activities and share your own #CharlestonSelfie as you’re out and about around town. We featured some great folks at various Charleston landmarks in this issue, including this adorable little girl who helped her editor mom out with some photos. :)

H.A.F. Creative - Around Town

My term as president of the Charleston American Marketing Association chapter comes to an end June 30 and it’s been quite a year. You can read a recap of the year’s highlights on the Charleston AMA Blog. What an honor to work with such incredible marketing folks in our area this year. In this photo, incoming president Andrew Barton presented me with a golden kettlebell – perfect gift for a CrossFit enthusiast.

At the same time, I roll off as board president for Postpartum Support Charleston – an organization I have volunteered with for several years. I’ll still be involved in furthering the work of this wonderful nonprofit in its mission of educating, supporting and healing. There is still much work to be done on the issue of postpartum mental health.

Join me on July 30 for the annual Charleston AMA Marketing Bootcamp - a full afternoon of marketing education followed by a summer social. Tickets are going fast so get yours before they sell out.
