Arne Scheibel , 1923 - 2017

It is with great fondness and sadness that we say good-bye to Arne Scheibel; professor, scientist, researcher and husband of Marian Diamond, who passed away peacefully at age 94 on April 3rd, 2017. Dr. Scheibel was a professor at UCLA for 55 years (1955-2010), and a founding figure for the field of neuroscience with over 200 academic publications.

As his former student and dear friend Professor Bob Jacobs wrote of him:
“His legacy, however, extends well beyond scientific contributions, with his generous and kind presence influencing generations of students, colleagues, and future scholars. He was a remarkable person in every respect. As a gifted teacher and an individual filled with humility, dignity, and grace, he left an enduring impression of kindness on everyone he met.”

You can read about Arne, in his own words here in "The History of Neuroscience in Autobiography." :

“A giant in the field of neuroscience” said his colleges at the UCLA Brain Research Institute, where he was first acting director and then director for 8 years. Here is their biography of Arne.

In addition, a UCLA article in memoriam.

His contributions to neuroscience and to this film were immense and he will remain forever in our hearts.
