Writtle University College Animal Welfare Workshop
Sabrina Brando recently visited Writtle University College to lead a workshop “Animal Care Professionals and Hummingbirds: Positive Animal Welfare through Global Collaboration and Small Actions Every Day” for university students of animal welfare. "I had a wonderful day teaching and interacting with students and faculty", said Sabrina, covering subjects such as the 24/7 approach to animal welfare, the use of science and common sense (dare I say?), the back-of-house, i.e. the spaces where animals spend time during the hours that staff is not present at the facility, the importance of applied science - putting science into action. To conclude the day Sabrina discussed the importance of human wellbeing, it being essential to be well ourselves first if we are serving other, such as in a caring profession as animal caregivers and veterinarians in all fields ranging from zoos and aquariums, to shelters, sanctuaries, and research facilities.
Dr Jonathan Amory, WUC’s Principal Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, said: “Sabrina is an inspirational individual whose teaching in animal welfare has changed management practices across the world. The key messages of considering the animal 24/7, being critical of all you see, step up and speak out and making a difference every day will help these MSc and BSc students in making the world a better place for animals.”
Thank you for the invitation Writtle University College, looking forward to being back!
