BUZZ...

Stake Your Claim

Beaumont Business Association received a $3,000 grant from Venture Portland for a Kiosk Project along Fremont Street. Each kiosk will house a district map of our businesses, and flyers for upcoming BBA events. This is Phase One of our beautification project that will eventually include public art and seating. Want to know how to get your business listed on the map? It's simple. Join BBA.

Beauchella

Paige Ashcroft, co-owner of Fate Beauty Society spent three days banging out some rockin’ braids at Coachella. As a national pro-educator for Amika (the hair care brand she carries in the studio), Paige was invited to provide hairstyling services at the world-famous music festival. It wasn't all work and no play; she managed to catch Beyonce, Eminem and The Weeknd. Visit the salon at 4605 NE Fremont, suite 107, and ask about Queen Bey's legendary performance and see what Paige can do for you.

Baer Witness

According to his facebook bio, Baer Charlton is a little picture framer in Beaumont with an international reputation — and a few books. A few books translates into a bookshelf full of titles he has authored. Stop in Americana Frame, 4223 NE Fremont, for master framing of your treasures or to ask this 2015 Pulitzer Prize Nominee (that’s right) about his latest creative endeavor. Just out, "Dragon," a colored pencil coloring book collaboration with fantasy artist Laura Reynolds. You can find out more about Baer on his Amazon page here.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Chances are if someone you know is wearing a letterman’s jacket, they are wearing the Settlemier name on their back — even if they didn’t get it in Portland. Settlemier’s Jackets is a Portland institution and Aaron Settlemier, 36, is heir apparent. His family has been crafting letterman jackets from quality leather and Pendleton wool since the 60s. They opened the 8,000 square foot factory on Fremont in 1993.

"We make jackets for most of the little sporting good stores in small towns up and down the West Coast.” Aaron said. "You can’t order a varsity jacket online, it’s too specific to a region or school. You have to know the trends and colors.”

Settlemier's jackets are custom-fit and specialty made from the same patterns his grandmother fashioned in her basement three generations ago. “You can’t buy them off the rack, “Aaron explained. And most importantly, with a price tag of aprox $350, you can’t return them.

The newest trend right now for Aaron, is former clients coming in to order jackets with their children. “They always say, ‘I remember coming here for my jacket!’ That’s what’s so great about it, it’s a personal product," Aaron said. "It’s emotional.”

Through clients like Nike and Wieden & Kennedy, Aaron has made jackets for Michelle and Barack Obama, Jay Z and numerous famous athletes. Let him make one for you.

"Full Letter Jacket" is an inside look at the history of the Settlemier family business. You can watch the documentary here.

JEF EATS

A Local Monthly Adventure

Jef doesn’t consider himself a wine person (we don’t believe him.) His next installment of Jef Eats takes him to a wine bar (we told you.)

One of my favorite meals was in the French Alps with my brother, on a mountaintop with some bread, cheese, charcuturie and wine procured from the town of Chamonix below our hike. It was incredible. To say that you could recreate that lunch with with some food found locally in Beaumont is saying something. And if you haven’t guessed, that something is Blackbird Wine & Atomic Cheese.

The wine I have tried at Blackbird has been wonderful, of course, with recommendations from Andy Diaz and his staff. But I come for the food. The sandwiches here are fantastic. I had the Cubano! Try the Medianoche, smoked cheddar with ham and apricot jam; and Blue Cheese Panini with salami, onion marmalade and arugula. Or, let them create a cheese plate for you. The crew has a sophisticated palate and they know how to pair flavors like you’ve never experienced. Stinky cheese with nuts and honey? Ten year old me would be crying for Kraft Singles. Adult me is saying bring it on!

If you want the best of both worlds, why not join the Blackbird Wine & Cheese Club? For $100 enjoy 4 to 6 bottles of regional wine paired with two Atomic Cheeses. They will even personalize the selection for your palate and deliver it. This is a hassle free, pay-when-you-want-it club. Use it for a gift, party or just because you want to think you are in the French Alps, even if it's just Mt. Tabor.
-Jef Atwood, Umpqua Bank.
