This past Thursday doctor assisted suicide became legal in Quebec in spite of an outstanding challenge to it.
On Dec. 1st the Québec Superior Court ruled that the law was in conflict with the Criminal Code. After this, the Court of Appeal granted permission for the ruling to be challenged. This means the law still came into effect last Thursday and will remain valid at least until Dec. 18th when arguments will be heard by the Court.
The euthanasia debate will also be continuing at Parliament once the federal government sits again after the Christmas break. The Supreme Court of Canada gave the government until February 6th, 2016 to come up with new legislation after striking down the current law.
It is reported that the federal government has asked for a six month extension on this deadline in order to give time for proper study and consultation.
