Captain Update - May 2017

I hope everyone is having a great spring so far! It is starting to warm up in the Carolinas and our race planning is in full swing. Many of you have asked about the race course and I wanted to share with you our latest draft. It certainly isn't complete, but it is probably 80% accurate, and will give you an idea of how we will navigate from Asheville to Greenville.

Race Course Draft

We will share more about the race course as we get closer to race day.

Ville to Ville Craft Brew Relay

Runner Spotlight - Beth Holland

One of my teammates, Beth Holland, came down with the flu this past Christmas. Beth began going septic and her body shut down one organ at a time. Beth spent several weeks on the ECMO (that’s beyond life support for those of us who don’t know medicine!!) and a ventilator, with very little hope for recovery or survival. She battled many obstacles in those harrowing days and defied all science as her body kicked back in a short amount of time. In a complete defy of science and what was expected of her, Beth has begun to run again in only 3 short months since she became ill. We all got tears in our eyes when she replied “I’m IN!” to the email chain about the Ville to Ville Relay. After having run two relays with her, I can’t imagine not having her on my team. She is a walking, running, miracle.

Local Accommodations and Airports

Hotels: Discount links to booking hotels in Greenville and Asheville will be emailed directly to everyone on your Team Member Form in the next few weeks. Please don't delay in booking a room, as both cities are very popular, and some hotels are starting to fill up already.

Airports: There are three regional airports to consider if you are flying in for the relay. Here are the distances from the start/finish lines.
Asheville Regional Airport (AVL): 25 minutes to starting line, 60 minutes to finish line
Greenville-Spartanburg International (GSP): 75 minutes to starting line, 25 minutes to finish line
Charlotte Douglas International (CLT): 2 hours to start line, 1.5 hours to finish line

Airport Advice: Flights will cost about the same to all three locations. Save some on gas money and fly into Greenville or Asheville. Our choice would be Greenville (GSP) so you can get to the airport easily on your way out of town.

More information to come!

Local Brew

13 Stripes Brewery
The newest brewery to open is Greenville is a good one! Located in the old Taylors Mill about 9 miles from downtown Greenville, this revitalized space is a great spot to spend a few hours and is extremely family and dog friendly. Named after the 13 stripes on the American flag, there is a Revolutionary War theme throughout the brewery.
Favorite Brew:
Sergeant Molly American Wheat - This wheat ale is light, flavorful, refreshing and perfect for the warm summer days coming to Greenville.

Good Eats

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack
If you like comfort food, then look no further than Rocky's. Known for their fried chicken and southern sides, Rocky's delivers the perfect meal after a long run or after a night visiting many of Beer City's local breweries.

Two locations in Asheville.
Our favorites: Leg/Thigh fried chicken combo with fried okra and pimento cheese grits. Choose your spice level wisely. The "Medium" is already high up on the Scoville scale!
