Did you know that Christmas isn't a big holiday in Scotland? That's because the celebration was outlawed in the 16th century Scottish Reformation. The ban persisted for 400 years, and Christmas was only declared a public holiday in 1958!
But even in medieval times, the celebration centered less around the birth of Jesus and more around the winter solstice. Blending Celtic paganism and the Jōl rites of the Vikings, the Scots decked the halls with boughs of holly, ivy, and mistletoe, feasted on smoked mutton, and burned Yule logs to keep the darkness at bay.
