Our blog is a place for us to talk about upcoming events and things going on in our community. Today we're taking on a very important topic with an article from actor, playwright and founder of hammer theatre, Sky Gilbert.

"Innocent artists are often the very first players in the gentrification game. They upgrade the neighbourhood without capitalist intent. But when I do art in Hamilton not about gentrification, I worry about becoming part of the problem."

Linda Gilbert

Linda Gilbert is a worldly volunteer. She is travelling to several different Fringe Festivals across North America and she will be making her stop at our own festival this July! After visiting the Vancouver Fringe Festival, she fell in love with the artists and atmosphere, and decided to take the “gap year” she never took after graduating from university.

Linda booked a cheap flight to Orlando, Florida, and signed up as a volunteer for the Orlando Fringe Festival, and then did a stint at the Portland Fringe Festival. Now at home for a break, Gilbert’s next stop is Hamilton and she is looking forward to what the Hamilton Fringe has to offer. “Every Fringe has a flavour,” Gilbert said, “I’ve never been and I’m excited to find out what it’s like there.”

After Hamilton, Linda heads for Calgary, Indianapolis, Victoria and then home to Vancouver. On the list for 2018: Tampa, San Diego, London (Ontario), Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton.

“The Fringe has opened up my mind to its creative side and shown me anything is possible. The staff, volunteers, and artists are real people who are warm, caring, and supportive. Everyone interacts with a love of theatre as their bond.”

We will welcome Linda Gilbert to Hamilton on July 19 at the 2017 Kick-Off. Why not join us?

The Hamilton Fringe Festival would not be possible without the support of our government and community partners.
