2019 Growing stronger together eNews Header v2

Hi Member,

Finally! The What's on in 2019? Veterinary CPD Calendar is launched (trumpets please). It's always a work in progress as new training events are constantly being added but you can find Version 1 below: both the online and pdf version.

Also this week we continue one of my favourite blog post series: So Many Other Things: The Reality of Veterinary Practice Part - it takes two to practice. You'll also find 3 things I bet you didn't know about...SpectraVET - they're a company who are truly passionate about their products, as well as educating & supporting their clients.

We're also very pleased to welcome Pet Professional Insurance to our Community. They've taken up our Practical Membership and we're looking forward to sharing their expertise with our Community.

Finally, I've also included a link to a Facebook Post and Photo Album that heartbreakingly shows the devastation after the terrible weather event experienced in North Queensland. I have no idea how the farmers will be able to recover from such a devastating loss of livestock and property, not to mention the wildlife affected. It seems like the least we can do is to look at the images, read the story behind them and spread the message.

Our aim is to help you - save time, connect & discover!

Enjoy your reading :)

Devastation

The Horrendous Weather NW Qld Weather Event of February 2019

This post & images are truly heartbreaking.

I don't think many of us are truly aware of the level of destruction caused by the recent rain event in NW Queensland and the impact on the farmers who have experienced such devastating loss of their much loved and cared for animals. Not to mention the devastation to the local wildlife.

As Kate Hunter explains in the post:
"We do not want handouts, but sometimes we do need government financial support when these natural disasters occur. Most of all, we need Australians to buy Australian Products. Empathy for us from our city dwellers will indeed help us to survive and rise again from this catastrophe, just as we have empathy for you during the many crazy weather events that continually happen in this land."

Maybe if each of us could share this on our personal and Business Facebook Pages and encourage our clients to do the same, it would go some way to show our support.

If anyone has any other suggestions as to how we could help out in more concrete ways, please let me know (judyg@vetanswers.com.au)

'She was screaming her dogs had been bitten': How skipping out bills hurts WA vets

The Sydney Morning Herald

I shared this post during the week on FB and suggested that it was a good one to share to help educate the community about some of the difficult issues vet practices are faced with every day.

It reached over 6,200 people, received over 1450 engagements and was shared 34 times.

If you missed it, it could be a good one to share with your community.

Interesting post - and great comments/responses

Vets can do more to reduce the suffering of flat-faced dog breeds (The Conversation)

By Paul McGreevy & Anne Fawcett

This post is well worth reading and sharing in itself, even more so as it was co-authored by Vetanswers' friend Dr Anne Fawcett (Small Animal Talk).

However, I also found the comments on the post fascinating to read and I was especially impressed with how well Anne responsed to them in such an insighful way.

Another one to share with your community.

Love Your Pet Love Your Vet video #13: What needs to change to improve the lives of vets?

Part 1 of 2

In this 2 minute video, Dr Andy Pieris discusses what she believes needs to change to improve the live of vets.

"Going into vet school and within vet school I think the students need to be made aware that this is a people focused industry. Yes it's about animals, but that's only one part of it.

I think there needs to be support for vets to learn how to communicate and build rapport with clients, because if you don't have that trust from your client, then they won't allow you to do the diagnostics and treatment that you want to do. And they'll get frustrated because you haven't explained what you want to do.

I think vets need support from within the industry to achieve this. Going into the industry vets need to try and land themselves in a clinic that really supports them to start with. I think the first few years can really make or break you as a vet."
