New York City Charter School of the Arts—or City School of the Arts— www.cityschoolofthearts.org—is a free, public, non-selective 6th-8th grade school with no audition or entrance exam. Our school was created in partnership with local families by a team of educators with decades of experience using the arts to bring learning to life for diverse communities of young people. This past fall we opened our doors to an inaugural class of 100 sixth graders representing a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and learning styles. We are so excited to look ahead to welcoming our second class of sixth graders in the fall of 2017.

Our innovative program

From the very start, we envisioned a school where the arts could serve as a pathway to exceptional academic learning and socio-emotional growth for all students, including English Language Learners, students with special needs and accelerated learners. Each day, our students expand their musicianship and their minds in our state-of-the-art piano lab and benefit both creatively and academically from our thriving partnerships with Juilliard and Educational Alliance.

In addition to rigorous academics and excellent training in music, theater, dance and visual art, our program includes a nature component, with students participating in multi-day overnight trips to camp three times a year. Watching our students come together as a community at camp is a testament to the powerful role nature can play in igniting our kids' truest potential.

City School of the Arts is committed to nurturing a learning community made up of staff and students who reflect the rich and vibrant city we live in. Hailing from all five boroughs and representing a vast array of cultures and backgrounds, students at CSA recognize the value of multiculturalism in an increasingly global world. Every day our faculty and staff members work tirelessly to create an inclusive and supportive school environment where all students can create, learn, and thrive.
