Indigenous People's March Joins Raqiyah Mays on Real Black News

"It’s been discussed among us as indigenous women that every single time that there is destruction and pollution in the land, there is an increase of rape and murder within our indigenous women communities. You have a pipeline that’s being built and the people building it come from all over. They set up a man camp along where the pipeline is being built in communities that are less fortunate or Native American reservations. And you have these men that are raping or murdering these women in the areas." - Activist Chenae Bullock, on Ep. 27 of Real Black News with Raqiyah Mays, breaking down why Indigenous Women are twice as likely to be sexually assaulted than women from any other race.

Brooklyn, NY (January 17, 2019) Episode 27 of Real Black News breaks down the top 5 black and brown news stories of the week with commentary from newsmakers who hail from the worlds of entertainment and activism. This week’s guests include activist Chenae Bullock (aka Sagkompanau Mishoon Netoouesqua) discussing the upcoming Indigenous People’s March in DC, on Friday, January 18, the day before The Women's March. Bullock explains the high rates of sexual assault and missing women among indigenous people. "With the last several years of the increase of pipelines or fracking, you have the increase of women being raped and murdered," says Bullock during the interview. "That’s why we fight so hard. That is one of the key points of the awareness that we’re marching on for the Indigenous People's March - the missing, murdered, indigenous women." Adding to the country's ongoing discussion about sexual violence and community culpability, thanks in part to Lifetime's docuseries "Surviving R. Kelly," Real Black News host Raqiyah Mays discusses her recent resignation as a personality on 107.5 WBLS and the #MuteRKelly movement. Journalist and Chicago native, Ronda Racha Penrice, joins "The Black Hollywood Report" to discuss the Aretha Franklin movie, Jennifer Hudson, awards season, and the Michael Jackson sexual assault docuseries coming to Sundance. While civil rights attorney, Shavar Jeffries, explains Republicans in Texas working to oust a Muslim Republican, along with the government shutdown’s effect on black and brown people, WIC, SNAP, and section 8.
