NATO & the Global Enduring Disorder

September 2022

***

As September ends, the Global Enduring Disorder continues to permeate international affairs. India and China's shifting positions towards Putin's War in Ukraine were on display at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, indicating that many of the world's disordering powers are increasingly tired of Putin's war. Some developments are giving us measured optimism, such as Ukraine's recent gains in the Northeast with the Kharkiv counteroffensive and the US Federal Reserve's proactive moves to order the global economy by clamping down on inflationary pressures. Less noteworthy but still encouraging are murmurings that AUKUS is functioning effectively as a collective deterrence pact in the Asia-Pacific region and that NATO's ongoing expansion to Sweden and Finland is already revitalising security collaboration and long term-planning. On the worrying side are questions around the damage Britain's new Prime Minister could do to US-UK relations via her plans to scrap the North Ireland Protocol and her announcements of tax cuts and inflationary borrowing and spending, which have tanked the pound. Even more distressing is Italy's election of a far-right neo-populist in Giorgia Meloni. As always, we are here to provide analysis, insight, and potential solutions to our Enduring Disorder and hope you will engage with the work we have been doing to unpack this era.
