Behind The Scenes
The Truth About Food
The truth about food is that we're having trouble with it. There's lots of bad news about our food supply. The more we learn, the harder it is to figure out what to do. Here's what we're hearing from you:
Food is scaring us.
Everywhere we turn, there are troubling findings. Gluten causes inflammation. GMOs are making us sick. CAFOs produce toxic meat, eggs, and milk. Seafood is filled with heavy metals, and whatever you do, avoid the frankenfish. We're even hearing that the organic label isn't enough anymore.
Food costs a fortune.
We're doing our best to eat organic meat and produce, eggs from pasture-raised chickens, and raw dairy. We're buying specialty products with the coveted labels. We're going broke.
Food is confusing us.
We're reading as much as we can. There's great information out there. It seems to make sense until we read something else, and then we realize... there's a lot of disagreement about what's healthy.
Food feels like a special club.
It seems everyone is on a special diet of some sort. Paleo, GAPS, body ecology, gluten-free, vegan, raw, detox, and more. Friends tell us that they're removing entire food categories. No corn! No soy! No grains! No dairy! Eat densely! Our palms get clammy as we think about what's for dinner.
Food is presented as a magic bullet.
"You are what you eat." We know that food is important. Food is medicine, even. Many of us are working hard to recover ourselves or our children from various conditions and disorders, from ADHD, diabetes, and bowel disease to allergies, Lyme, and obesity. We hear miraculous stories from people who changed how they eat. The stakes feel awfully high.
Food is making us social misfits.
We're changing the way we eat and then we realize that we can't:
▪ go out to eat
▪ go on vacation
▪ entertain on any level
▪ make a birthday cake
▪ fill the lunch box with "non-embarrassing" food
Food is making us feel like freaks.
Food is stressing us out.
We're paralyzed in the grocery store. We're eating the same thing all the time. We're making different meals for the kids. We're going broke. Just when we think we've got something figured out, the family revolts.
We don't know what to eat anymore!!!
