Educate Yourself and Change Your World!

education

There weren't many things in life that Nelson Mandela didn't have a strong opinion on. Education was no exception. Few modern day leaders have done as much to increase the standard of living through simple education.

You may not realize it, but you have just as much of an opportunity in your own life. Educating yourself, and indirectly, your children, about health is arguably the single most important thing you can do.

As we prepare to send our children back to school, let us take a moment to consider the impact good, healthful decisions can have on their lives.

Food Nutrition Ignorance: How to Properly Educate Yourself

Navigating-Nutrition-Labels-Webinar1

One of the most important things we can do in this day and age is to educate ourselves on food nutrition. So many health issues, both short- and long-term, can be avoided by taking this simple step.

As outlined at Fitday.com, here are a few things you can do to make sure you know what you need to.

1) Know What Your Body Needs

Food nutrition guides are incredibly helpful , but it's important to remember that every person is different. Height, weight, genetics and family history all play a role in determining what kind of food your body needs. Sometimes, the best method is to seek outside assistance, from either a doctor or a nutritionist.

2) Know What Your Food Contains

Once you've determined what kind of food your body needs, the next step is educating yourself on the benefits and properties of different types of food. Understanding the types of nutrients that each food provides will provide you with the most wholesome, effective diet.

3) Learn About Labels

For any food that's packaged or processed, the nutrition info that you need is on the label. Start to familiarize yourself with the nutritional label: how it works, what it contains. You'll probably find you know a lot less than you think you do. For instance, the serving sizes rarely reflect the standard "American" portion.

Is the Water That Comes Out of the Drinking Fountain Safe?

water-fountain

Public water fountains were introduced nearly 150 years ago, bringing free, clean water to schools, parks, city buildings and train stations all over the country.

By the 1930s, water fountains were everywhere, from apartment buildings and sports stadiums to libraries and airports.

Flash forward nearly 90 years, and these public fountains are being slowly phased out–the International Plumbing Code has cut the number mandated for each office building in half–and a public health battle is being waged by those who claim the fountains have become a haven for a cocktail of germs.

In February, the Pacific Institute released a report that highlighted the link between disease outbreaks and public drinking fountains. The report found that the majority of problems could be traced to contamination and poor cleaning of water infrastructure. This is not the only problem that plagues drinking fountains, however. Another study found that water fountain handles are among the most highly contaminated surfaces in elementary schools, and frequently with norovirus and influenza.

It's Time...for Something New and Refreshing!

website screenshot

In case you haven't heard, Noel and Dr. Sonja have launched a t-shirt company (It's Time), that specializes in products with Bible verses and references.

It's Time is committed to donating 10% of its profits to local churches that support outreach programs to our community. Please join us in spreading the Word.

The "it's time" concept was spawned by the previous contentious election cycle that was so polarizing for our country. Whichever side you were on, or if you were not on either side, most of us recognized that there was a need for something more.

We believe that something more is someone: Jesus. Therefore: "it's time" specifically refers to our Lord and us actively seeking to be aware and honor Him in our lives.

Head on over to our website and take a look at our inventory, some of which can be seen in the picture below.

Are You Sleep Deprived?

sleep-deprivation

Did you get enough sleep last night? If your answer is no, you're likely in good company. The CDC estimates that 35% of U.S. adults (age 18-60) are not getting the recommended seven hours of sleep each night.

Among children, the estimates aren't as high, but the effects are often worse, with low test scores and behavior issues common among kids getting insufficient amounts of sleep.

So, what are we to do?

For starters, let's take a look at some common signs of sleep deprivation:

1) You Always Feel Hungry

Lack of sleep influences hormone levels, and increases ghrelin, also known as the "hunger hormone." Simply put, sleep deprivation gives you the munchies.

2) You've Gained Weight

When you eat more while sleep deprives, you gain weight more quickly. Losing as little as 30 minutes of sleep each night can increase risk for obesity by 17 percent and insulin resistance by 39%.

3) Your Memory Fails You

The lack of sleep actually modifies genes in your brain, and there are many studies that deduce that synaptic connections in the brain are strengthened while you sleep.

For more signs of sleep deprivation, as well as tips to improve both the quality and quantity of your sleep, check out the link below.
