Wha gwaan?

I don't want to jinx things, but rumour has it we may get a sea breeze this weekend. I'm sure we are all sick & tired of the Westerlies that have been wreaking havoc on us this season. So much so, guess what Da Easy Crew started referring to Friday as..? click here.

Many thanks to all the contributors for this edition. And well done to our junior squad for such great results and the event write up.

Get excited. Get down to BSC. You can do it if you try - click here.

Boyd Newton, Da Easy Crew, Editor.

Dubious Info

The clergy held a match racing championship last month. Unfortunately, with the Nuns holding a lead over the Monks they began taking on water, sinking before the finish. They were too holy.

NSW MJ Teams Race

On Sunday, October 20th 2019, the annual NSW Manly Junior Teams Race was hosted by Balmoral Sailing Club in hunter Bay. Manly Junior sailors flocked to the venue with a total of eight 3 boat teams from Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club, Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Club, Balmoral Sailing Club and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Sailing Club. With the teams from Manly and Middle Harbour arriving by water.

mj1

After a briefing for all teams and sailors in the club house, the start was delayed while the Westerly was replaced by light SE seabreeze. The format of racing was a round-robin on a short "S" shaped course with starts staggered approximately 3 minutes apart. The racing was short and sharp with not a lot of time to get back to the start for the next race.

mj2

Our team consisted of skipper Rowan and crew Jay on Blackjack, skipper Will and crew Elijah on Jenny Wren and skipper Oliver (me) and crew Mo on Hi-Roller.

Our first race as a team didn’t go so well and we lost to the top Manly team. After that it was, fittingly enough, much smoother sailing. We managed to win our remaining round-robin races once we overcame our slow start. That was a big win for us, as on our first try of teams racing in 2017, we finished in last place.

This time we made it all the way to the final for the top two teams. We started strongly and were leading with places of 2-3-4 but incurred a penalty allowing the opposition through. A well-deserved win to the Manly team. We settled for 2nd place, content however with our incredible progression over 2 years.

MJ Juniors

It was a great day out and I’d like to thank my crew and team mates for a great performance. Also a big thanks to our parents for making it all happen.

We are looking forward to next year to go one better!

TT1 - 19th October, Balmoral Sailing Club

Congratulations to all competitors who braved the `wild westerly’ conditions on Middle Harbour on Saturday 19th of October.

With the breeze showing no mercy the fleet suffered several mishaps and early retirements, including GRSC’s Gary & Robyn Ratcliffe who, while fighting for the lead, lost all steering due to a broken rudder. A bit like this - only Ratz stayed upright!

Throughout the afternoon, there were many multiple capsizes, distressed boats & tow-ins as the wind built in strength with gusts hitting 34knots.

By end, the wild day belonged to the locals who claimed all podium positions:
1st - Josh Faddy & Paula Cummins, Mango Chilli
2nd - John Balass & Heather Forton, More Edge
3rd - Boyd Newton & Kylie Symonds, Rastasarmouse

Many thanks to members, volunteers and Race Committee of BSC for hosting TT1 in very challenging conditions.

National E News

A brand new information flyer for the class has been produced (see it here) and will be in circulation from next week. Hopefully this could spark some interest as we have had a slow start this season. There are several boats on the market at the moment at very attractive prices (see For Sale or Wanted below).

National Titles

The national titles this season will be at Gosford Sailing Club from 6th to 10th January 2020. Sailing on Brisbane Water has much to commend it with a tidal range half Sydney’s, no commercial maritime traffic, smooth water and good winds. We last sailed a national series there in 2014 which was a great success resulting in some very competitive sailing.

GSC is a strong dinghy club with excellent facilities located close to town. At the same time the Central Coast is a great place for a summer holiday. While it is always nice to stay near the venue Gosford as is in fact in commuting distance for Sydney should that be necessary. The NOR is available from the Class Captain.

So much more than Tasty

The word Bovine is used for anything to do with animals from the genus 'Bos', which classifies wild and domestic cattle. Not to be confused with 'Bros' (such quality journalism, me thinks I should be famous!) - click here.

Bovine Collagen Bioinductive Implant

Bovine Collagen Bioinductive Implants are not tasty delights from your local burger joint. They are much better news for your health. These implants are revolutionising shoulder rotator cuffs repairs.

Previously, surgery meant a 12 month recovery with high recurrence of the injury. By stimulating the body's healing response, recovery times with implants are measured in weeks rather than months and outcomes are typically much better.

Implant should be available on the PBS by the end of this sailing season - get in quick before the cows find out - they may retaliate.
