Community Service Opportunities

EVERY MEMBER of the Greek Community needs to attend 1 All Greek Event of community service EACH SEMESTER in addition to the required 10 total hours. See below for some upcoming options.

-November 1st– December 1st Coat Drive: Do you, your family, or friends have some extra coats to donate? The annual coat drive helps the greater Redlands community stay warm during the winter months. Please donate your jackets, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, and sleeping bags. Look for the coat racks and bins (for non-hanging items) in each dorm lobby, in the Administration Building, at the VC and in the Commons on campus!

-FSAR Fall Food Drive, November 7th and 14th: On Saturday, the 14th from 9am-4pm volunteers are needed to help pick up the donations from the neighborhoods, as well as sort, process, and weigh all of the food at Family Services Association of Redlands located at 612 Lawton St. Please contact the Volunteer Center to sign-up!

-Saturday, November 14th: Beginning at 9am is the Big Buddies Kickball Tournament (aka the event of the year)! Each organization received a captain's packet at Greek Council. If your organization wishes to make a second team, please come by our table during lunch or dinner this and next week or come by CSL (2nd floor of Hunsaker) and ask for a packet! This event will count as a maximum of 2 community service hours! E-mail big_buddies@redlands.edu if you have any questions regarding this event.

-Sunday, November 15th: Basket packaging at the Volunteer Center. Thanksgiving baskets will be organized and prepared for local families throughout the community. Keep in mind that there will only be so many baskets to package! Please contact either Whitney Martinez (whitney_martinez@redlands.edu) or the Volunteer Center (voluneer_center@redlands.edu) with any questions regarding this event. (See attached Volunteer Voice for more opportunities regarding this event.)

-Thursday, November 19th: 9am - 6pm BARC is expecting to have members of Greek Life visit throughout the day and help with various tasks around the shop and with the animals in the shelter. (You can get service hours for playing with cats and walking dogs, best service ever.) You MUST sign in at this event! Please directly contact Amanda if you have any questions regarding/need a ride to this event.

-Friday, November 20th: Blood Drive & Bone Marrow Registry. Come and donate from 11am-5pm at our 6th Annual Blood Drive & Bone Marrow Registry in honor of Cece Svenson. City of Hope & Be the Match are hosting the blood drive with the option of Bone Marrow registry. Come find us in the commons and sign-up to donate or volunteer for the next few weeks!

-Saturday, November 21st: 9am - 12pm is the Orange Blossom Trail Clean-up! A section of this trail will be dedicated to the University of Redlands and we get to help plant/decorate it. It's a great time to wear some letters and rep your organization! Feel free to invite your alums as the whole community of Redlands will be coming together this morning to beautify the trail. It would be appreciated if you could sign-up early (at the site on the flier or at the Volunteer Center) so that there will be a general idea of how many people are expected to that there are supplies for everyone! This event will count as the new requirement of attending an "all-Greek event." Please contact Erin Sanborn (erin_sanborn@redlands.edu) if you have any questions regarding this event.

-If your organization would like to visit on a night of Big Buddies, please contact big_buddies@redlands.edu for more information!

-Micah House volunteers are still needed! Volunteers are needed from 2-5pm on Monday-Thursdays. If you are interested please visit micahhouseredlands.org/volunteers-wanted.

Community Service at a NASCAR Race

Revolution Youth Advocates(RYA) is a 501(c)(3), based in San Bernardino, focused on helping middle school, high school and young adults develop their personal, social, emotional and intellectual skills. They partner with different groups such as Pacific High School and Judson Baptist Church to provide a variety of services to the underserved teen and young adult population of San Bernardino and surrounding cities. One of their biggest events during the year is Summer Camp for these kids. Unfortunately, 99% of the kids can’t afford to go, but that’s where RYA steps in. RYA scholarships the kids to be able to attend this camp each year, and every year it’s an amazing experience. The kids learn so much, they have time to just be off the streets, they are talking to people who actually want to listen, and it’s an experience they would never have gotten any other way.

Nascar 2016 - Volunteers will help seat in the main grandstand area on Sunday, March 20th.
March 17, 2016 Volunteers 100
March 18, 2016 Volunteers 100
March 19, 2016 Volunteers 200
March 20, 2016 Volunteers 500
If we reach those numbers we will raise $50,000.00!!

An Alumn has also arranged for transportation to and from the U of R which removes that issue completely. I believe that local support of philanthropy is one of Redlands’ greatest attributes.
