Please help protect one of Yarra's historic shopping strips: Queens Parade

Proposed amendment C231

Some of you no doubt attended the packed public meeting organised by Protect Fitzroy North on Monday, 19 November, about the proposed planning scheme amendment C231 which is open for community input until 5 pm, Friday, 30 November.

Council's aim is to seek the Minister's approval in relation to height limits, set-backs and other controls to protect this important heritage precinct.

This is an urgent and special request to FRA members and supporters to support the residents in their campaign.

For those of you who were not at the public meeting, you can access the excellent presentation online, where you will see some of the key issues that have been identified, including:

▪ Push for mid-rise form over heritage is inappropriate
▪ Excessive heights / wall heights
▪ Setbacks infringe on residents behind
▪ Extra traffic through laneways is undesirable

The Protect Fitzroy North website also has helpful information and links.

At this stage in the process numbers matter! Residents are really trying to convince the council officers to re-consider, in particular, the controls for the heritage shopping strip that allow visible built form over the heritage shops.

It is understood a Council decision will be made in April 2019. Ultimately the decision to approve the amendment will be made by the Minister for Planning.

Queens Parade is the first in a long series of precincts where the battle for heritage and protection of neighbourhood character will play out in the next year or two - others being the Smith Street, Brunswick Street, Victoria Street and Bridge Road precincts.

Don't forget: deadline, Friday, 30 November
